Tyreek Hill says he wants to try out for 2020 Olympic team

He's an NFL player so he'd likely fail the WADA drug tests...they can get away with stuff in the NFL that you wont in track and field. "Supplements"....

I'm not sure people think that football players could just jump on the track and beat highly trained sprinters. However, I think people correctly think that in the USA many of our best athletes choose to play more lucrative and higher profile team sports. If everyone trained for their best T&F event we could have very different people at the top.

I think a lot of Americans )who are sports ignorant) think football players can jump into track and be stars.

Most of the one who were stars did so before their NFL careers started AND the PEDs issue is important to consider.

I could see Tyreek Hill trying since hes actually legit. A lot of NFL players have hyped themselves to try and make Olympics but never really showed up to race. Adrian Peterson comes to mind and there's definitely several others talking with no action. Some of these guys have huge egos and couldn't handle racing for the fact they would get beat. The NFL likes to say they have the fastest and best athletes in the world but that is not entirely true at all.

Keyword is could. The truth is that most football players do track in high school at least, and most of them are good but not great. The greats are notable (Marquise Goodwin, Tyreek Hill, Jalen Ramsey, Raheem Mostert). To assume that they would then progress to be the best in the USA is a leap because the majority of the best high schoolers from a given grade who commit to track don't get down to running in the 9.9s/sub20s/sub 45s consistently after their college careers.

And there are the guys who try football and then abandon it and do not follow the progression of a Christian Coleman or Noah Lyles. Think Jeff Demps, Trindon Holliday, Jahvid Best, David Wilson. There're some exceptions like Devon Allen (though it's worth noting that Grant Holloway - who was pretty good at football in his own right but opted for track - has already surpassed him). Worth noting many of these exceptions (including Hill, Wisco RB Allen, Mostert, Ramsey) do compete at Track at the NCAA level.

So, while Hill being a world-beater in track is possible had he ditched football, to say it would have happened or to use him as proof that the best sprinters are playing football or other sports....Disagree strongly.

This. I remember a few years ago Brent Musberger was saying that some WR had "world class speed"!!!!

I looked him up- 10.5 (rounds up to 10.74) that's the school record at the high school I teach at.

Hardly world class.

That said- it might actually be good for track (in the US) if some of those guys could at least be competitive.

But, remember, track is an international sport, football players are unknown to them.

Most NFL players would be just another American sprinter.

He's legit. He broke the all-classification state records at 100 and 200 meters in Georgia HS for (I think) Coffee County and Georgia is a state that produces national caliber sprinters. He may be past his prime though for sprinters, too busy parlaying his speed into millions of dollars on the gridiron, not thousands on the track.

I think it's great. If he hits the qualifying standard why wouldn't he. There have been plenty of Olympians that played football too. Plus, I think it will bring more press to it and maybe get more fans to watch the meet.

Can he make it? Not likely but as a track and field fan I would love to see it!

I trained with several fast NFL guys, they are for real.

Those HS times are real.

Super-world-class times are all sprint-doped: not just anabolics, but also things designed to keep weight off, and pump the neurology. Without a specific sprint regimen and specific sprint juice, all the sprint superstars would be where Hill would be, had he kept at it but not gone sprint pro.

There are some sprint talents in the NFL. If they had sprint-specific programs, they would be much faster than you think. At the top, there is no ubermensch—all guys are pretty even. Yes you have outliers who have all pumped themselves up by half a second—but Hill would have done that too, had he chosen that path. He is IMO a 9.8x sprint-specific athlete.

No not everybody in the NFL is fast, even guys who are reported to be fast. Great accelerators, yes, but a whole bunch of the 100 is speed maintenance, and vmax—not something that football trains. It is a big deal. Hill might have natural talent in that area, which will get him a long way—but most NFL’ers don’t. You can get to 10.7, maybe even 10.5 if you are lucky, even if you don’t have top vmax or speed maintenance—but you will never get faster.

Can he make it this year if he tries? If he had been dedicatedly training since Sept, I would say that he would have a decent shot. At this late stage, I would say not—but on his side the Olympics are late, and the current programs can work on short time-frames. His stock in trade is his speed, which he has always had, so maybe he has been clean the whole time.

The issue is not with him, it is with other sprinters. If they show up clean, he has a shot, even if he is not sub-10. 10.1’s won’t cut it, IMO. Come trials, there will be guys stacked in that time zone, who can handle rounds without injury.

Think he’s fast? Think Carlin Isles, maybe Jeff Demps. Does he have a shot? In an off-year, yes—in an Olympic year, it is a stretch. Again, it depends on what everyone else does. Can he compete for a different nation? That would be the best, then he could train for the games and not for Trials.

I hope he tries.

I don't think the player wants it out there, and where I work has a potential business opportunity with him, so yeah that's about it.

He's been in the NFL wink-wink PED testing program.

In terms of PED consumption, he should be far ahead of sprinters who go through year-round WADA and USADA testing, which doesn't keep runners clean, but they do have to be cleaner than NFL standards.
