Mary Tried to Rejoin NOP in April 2019

This response is the same reaonjng hs coaches the do too much with female athletes use when their kids aren’t successful in college - “they ran fine under me” - when in reality it takes time for the bones to deplete and not develop. It’s a cumulative effect - so a female can be malnourished and not eating and run fast - the n eventually the body will break down (a lot of times after they leave the program). Then the previous coach can easily say - “my training worked, it’s not my fault” but the reality is - the girl was doing too much, not getting her period with the original coach and the body is just now responding to the long term damage. She is right having a female involved and understanding what a girls body needs to do to be successful in the long run is extremely important to female athletes

I don't think Mary Cain needs to be criticized in any way here. She joined that team as a 16-year-old, and teenagers up to even mid 20s for many people, are just very naive. There is also an acceptance of authority for many that young which is why so many children and young people are victimized. It sounds like she has gotten to the place where she can see more clearly what was happening back then, and she is calling it out as she sees it.

I hope she gets in life what she wants. She is clearly a smart person, so if the running doesn't ever come back to an elite level, I hope she makes a big splash in some other way.

She's 23. Her genetic gifts are off the charts. Her career isn't even close to being over.

Of course her career is over. Just like Alan Webb and Josh McDougall - once you lose it for a lengthy period of time, you never get it back. And in fairness to Salazar, why would he have any interest in coaching someone who is a) overweight and b) not even remotely capable of running national class times? He wouldn't. Not when you have the best female runner in the world in your camp.

It doesn't take a female to understand what a girls body needs to be successful in the long run, just like it doesn't take a male to understand what a boys body needs to be successful in the long run. It takes knowledge. And it's knowledge that made a lot of us cringe when her parents let her join NOP while she was still a kid. Out of everyone involved in the situation it's her parents that probably have the most regret. Sad story all around.

Not sure why Kara has such a problem with this. Nike is saying this is the first they knew of things so they're starting to investigate now. Hard for the company to do anything about things they have no knowledge about.

I believe Mary is a victim. I believe that she was openly struggling with many mental issues and physical issues and NO ONE came to her aid. Those close to her let her down and failed her. This includes AlSal, Nike, her teammates, and - most importantly - her parents.

The way she was sacrificed to the machine is what is reprehensible and I feel deeply that she is owed a debt in some way. Someone needs to make this right for Mary.

What I do NOT believe is that this has anything at all to do with MeToo or toxic masculinity or gender disparity or sexual abuse. I am not sure why the NYT is spinning these narratives. This poor young woman has been through so much, and now she is just being used again. I am not worried about AlSal or Nike. I am mainly concerned that the NYT just threw Mary in front of the Alt Right Troll Machine for no reason other than to sell clicks.

I hope that she has a family member or friend that is reading this that can help her out. If she wants to run again, she has the talent to do so. She can be a world beater with the right coaching. If she no longer wants to train, that is fine as well. She needs to find peace and this article just took her in a 180 degree turn away from it.

You want to be an offensive lineman in the NFL? You have to be at least 280. Coaches would flip out and cut your arse if you showed up to camp at 240.

Cain was told she would not be a great runner if she could t keep her weight down. Either accept that or get out.

I can see why Kara has a problem with it. Depending on how you read it they are pretty much saying that Mary is a liar (in a nice way) and that she made up the claims because she didn't get accepted back on the team earlier this year. Not my words just what I could see someone making out of that statement.

Mary is someone that needs support regardless of what you may think Alberto did or didn't do. She is an amazing talent and one that I hope we can keep within the sport moving forward. She absolutely could come back with the right support. I would coach her for free.

My guess is that she’s trying to disassociate from the broad brush of NOP athlete PED abuse allegations.
