North Central runs short repeats

how on Earth can anyone give sh*t to North Central. Nothing but respect for that program and what they've done. Not even from the same school. Its absolutely ridiculous to assume that NCC kids don't study because they do doubles, probably the most ridiculous thing I heard all day

Recruiting makes a difference, of course. What separates the top teams in college at any division is what you do with your recruits. My college would get a lot of recruits who would drop out of xc early and never even perform at their hs level, as they saw academics as more important. A few years later when the same coach was able to get those recruits to stay on the team, he started winning national championships. I've also been looking at what differentiates high school programs and there are huge differences within any given area based on 1) how many people they get to come out for the team, and 2) whether they are able to get them to do somewhat significant mileage and workouts. The good teams are very talented at the top and very deep, usually in both genders, whereas the great majority of teams have consistently poor depth AND top runners. That's training, not genetics. The better programs will have a lot of runners running 40-60 mpw with two workouts of 5-6 miles and a race or long run, while the bad ones will have some running 20-40 and many running 0-10, with maybe some short intervals or maybe just daily runs, but only 4-5 days a week.

I went to North Central and it's totally a clown college. But why would I want to waste time studying like the rest of you nerds when I can run 100 miles per week, slam a few pitchers at the lantern, and still graduate with a high-paying job? You poor saps have yourselves convinced that school rank actually matters. In your next interview, be sure to print of the latest US News & World Report rankings so you can give it to the hiring committee.

As a libertarian, given this news, I think we should take a close look at the national championship results over the last 50 years. What else could NCC have been lying about? Perhaps course cutting is involved?

Which star North Central runner got caught drinking underage (I am not critical of this), got suspended from the team, only to have the bastion of good virtue Al Carius pull some strings to nullify any consequences? A culture dedicated to teaching life lessons and values! No hypocrisy at all! Blackwell!

You just sound really mad that maybe you weren't dedicated or disciplined enough to cut it on the team or maybe you were too self-centered and lazy to put in the work to be good and now you want to take it out on the success you could have had. It's a bad look, my guy. You should maybe put that energy somewhere more useful, like maybe into your mileage!

Is your underage drinking example the same alum who actually went to rehab with the help of Al, came back sober, won a national title, and now is a multi millionaire? If so, then I think that shows virtue.

I'm tired of this being parroted around here. He doesn't turn slow guys into fast guys. He gets already pretty fast guys and gets them to run 100 mile weeks. It's not fucking rocket science. Here are the high school times of the recent championship teams:

Dhruvil - 14:52/9:21

Baldonado - 15:32/9:34/4:27

Buechner - 14:48/1:57/4:26

Osmulski - 15:15/4:26

Z Hird - 14:52/4:25/9:41

Mckenna - 4:13 lol

Norvell - 15:28, couldn't find much but was already good on day 1 of freshman year at NCC

Borowsky - state champion two miler

O'Keefe - 15:35/9:53

Bailon - 15:23/4:37

Plank - 14:41 (was this short?)/4:25/9:40

So yeah, just a bunch of slow, untalented 10 minute two milers. Pretty sure any of the better D3 programs would have turned that first group into a few 60 point team titles. These kids do work very hard. They are driven by a cult like social structure and a holier-than-thou mentality lead by their head coach. Al does know his running. I just felt like the life lessons portion of the coaching was unnecessary and mostly wrong. Running is not like life. Running does not teach you life lessons (unless you were too stupid to realize working hard at something would make you better at it). Cross Country is a normal sport just like any other.

I didn't know of the story with the alcoholic turned all American, so I must not be who you think I am Mr. IthinkIknowwhoyouare. Although if you have to guess from a group of people you think were disenfranchised by the program, that would only prove my point.

And of course I am mad/venting. This is an anonymous message board. I don't understand why people don't abuse this more. I'm sad no one made any guesses, but I guess I'm only talking to North Central boys at this point so you probably already know the answers.
