Get some shoe laces or wire and use it to create a loop and run it through the tab on each gel. You'll easily fit 4-6 gels on there (I've only done 4) and you have the loop to hold onto and easily wrap around your hand.
This will also help in easily tearing them open without dropping one in the early part of the race and no need to have weird things in your shorts annoying you on raceday.
