Well a few observations: if Jones has run 3:55 for 1500m he is on a different planet than most 400m runners. I can assure you that if he has done that his best event is 800m.
Yes he may be a 44.63 runner but 3:55 indicates an aerobic system that would make him ideally suited to the two lapper. Remember the Cuban Alberto Jaunterona.
Coe ran very few 800's as a junior and 50-51 as a 17 year old is average at best.
44.63 puts him on a different planet than most 800m runners also. Nobody can say if this kids best distance is 400m or 800m. But putting on 20lbs of BW might really interfer with his ability to run a fast 800m.
44.63 puts him right about at the top of 800m runners with 400m speed, but Korir has run 44.2 and Amos runs sub-45, and Devin Dixon has split 43 for TAMU, which puts him around where Jones is for 400 speed. So if Jones were competing in a global 400m event with only the world's elite 800m runners, he still might not even have the best foot speed. His 200m PR is quite fast, but it's not sub 21, and that is absolutely key for keeping up with the blistering paces we've seen in global 400m finals in recent years (for instance, WVN's world record involved a first 200 that was half a second faster than Jones's flat 200m PR. He should probably consider moving up to the 800 if he ever wants a shot at a global title.
