Since Solomon was a 400-based guy, I'll say the 400 guy:

Sorry, the longest race has the most pain.

That is unless of course one does not go all out!
The most intense pain in order:
100
200
400
800
1500
etc.
Unless of course you jog the thing.
The most intense pain in order:
- reading your bullsht post
- passing kidney stones
- emergency field circumcision
etc.
Distance running is a different kind of pain. Completely off topic.
The 400 guy hurts more than the miler because he slows down more in the last 200. That's the killer, the slowing down and trying not to.
But you can't fight acidosis, it's like trying to stop a wave crashing over you, the more you fight it the more it hurts. And the faster the runner, the more the hurt.
The best 800 guys aren't fighting so hard, they are doing a controlled decelleration from early in the race knowing (or hoping) everyone else is going to die.

You didn’t even remotely answer the question.
Yes, I did. Look more closely.

Four-hundred metres gals & guys are hurting more in a 800m race than 1500m gals & guys. Look at DNF's. We see elite 400/800 athletes not able to finish an 800m race. I am thinking of Mark Everett. I am thinking Alysia Johnson-Montano. I do not recall seeing an elite 1500m gal or guy not finishing an 800m race. Fifteen hundred metres athletes may be more fit than 400m athletes due to weekly mileage. Four-hundred metres athletes are lifting weights more frequently than 1500m athletes, most likely. Four-hundred metres athletes are doing more plyometrics than 1500m athletes, most likely. Four-hundred metres athletes are doing more 50 & 100 (yard or metres) sprints with plenty of rest than 1500m runners. A lot of training 400m athletes are doing is to stimulate neuromuscular coordination but activities which does not increase fitness. You may say: How do 400/800 men average 51 seconds per 400m if they are not as fit as 800/1500 athletes? You may say: How do 400/800 women average 57 seconds per 400m if they are not as fit as 800/1500 athletes? Answer: Speed reserve.
