I don't follow any runners' youtube channels, but Sage is doing a good job of making me curious about his as he seems to indicate he is sometimes maybe a little bit of a douche on his. The reason that interests me is that he always seems pretty reasonable on this forum with well thought through commentary (not just about himself, but on actual training thread discussions).
To the extent he rationalizes his lesser performances or toots his own horn, it is done no more often than I or other unkown and non-elite runners on here usually do.

It's largely jealousy. Because of his pleasant personality and smooth presentation on camera, he can make money probably for the rest of his life from running (on YouTube) without his earnings being dependent on results. Also - he's a vegan AND strongly anti-doping. So basically, he's wearing three targets on his back for the vicious trolls to aim at.

Very middle class in the US. Actually you can ask Rojo how much financial aid I got (need-based) from Cornell because by Cornell standards we were a "poor." It was more affordable for me to go to Cornell than it would have been to go to Oregon State. I still had to work part-time to make ends met in college as part of the federal student aid as well.
When I moved to Boulder 7 years ago I had all my stuff packed into my super high mileage '97 Rav 4 (that I bought for $3500 in cash in MI.) and a few thousand dollars of life savings to my name. I had zero sponsors at the time and had to get an entry level customer service job at OtterBox for $10 per hour. Through online coaching and slowing growing an audience on social media and plugging away at the youtube channel (as well as racing frequently) I was fortunate to gain some sponsors over the years. Slowly my dreams became a reality.
Now thanks to the support of sponsors and the generosity of the running community as a whole I've been able to make it in Boulder as a pro athlete ever since then. I finally paid off my own student loan debt a few years ago. And I bought a condo.

I can see why people get rubbed the wrong way with some of my social media antics (or they disagree with my diet etc.) That's all part of the territory of being active online (and for that matter posting under my real name on here!). I'm all about transparency and honestly though.
It seems like there are a few people/[one person ] who really dislike me for some reason (And I really don't think I've wronged anyone in life...I haven't slept with anyone's wife etc.). While I certainly ran my best half and full marathon times at Hansons I can't say I was better off there (or just focusing 100% road marathons). It is really hard to make any money at all when you are just a 2:16 marathoner in the US! Even back then...
Now I get to travel a lot more internationally and there are more opportunities in MUT Running for me. There are some really cool and beautiful trails/mountains out there in the world to explore. The running community (and my sponsors) has been extremely supportive and generous and for that I'm forever grateful.

spot on with the over analyzing point. sage needs to go old school, too much extra stuff that does nothing but make you question performances that don't go right and are simply due to lack of fitness OR you just had a bad day, we all have them.

I have seen a bunch of Sage's videos and I don't think he does this (bolded). I'd say many of his videos are good training tools and/or entertaining. Every(most, to avoid using absolutes) Sage post on LRC suggests that he is a stand up guy. Not that I agree with everything training wise that he says or does of course. Sage is a positive influence on LRC and he reacts well to all the troll/grief he gets on here.
I'd agree with the other posters that say he over analyzes his failures.

Post of the Thread! This describes Sage as much as anything else ever has. Too much. You're running out of time Sage, get it together and you can still make the marathon trials, IF that's your goal? Read this dudes post, he's right (or she).
Note that I didn't say he is a douche, but rather that he himself seemed to suggest as much (including self-references as Narcissistic). The disconnect between those statements and his LRC persona is what makes me curious (but not curious enough to actually watch any videos).

Regardless, I truly think he could qualify again, I really do, but his focus is scattered and that's not good for a beast like the marathon. Some runners have a solid level of talent but never reach their potential. I believe Mr. Canaday is one of those runners. But as a poster said, the clock is turning and in another 4 years, that pace will be harder than the effort it is today.
Sage I think your best videos are the ones in a particular series. The first OTQ series, where we watched you do the workout and you explained why you were doing it, was awesome. Keep it up! Thanks!
