No he doesn't deserve it because he's been going on tear against essentially no one. His main competition should be the 2019 NBIN 60m champion, but he's unfortunately dealing with a minor foot injury. If things look up, they'll meet at the US Junior champs in July.
All his other real competition reside in Jamaica and Indonesia, the latter of whom he likely won't race until next year.
But the bottom line:
He is basically a 10.2 sprinter who lucked out with wind assistance.
He's a 20.5 sprinter in a generation where we've had Noah Lyles and Michael Norman running 20.1 and 20.2s as HS juniors and seniors.
He's a 46 400m runner when Tyrese Cooper, ostensible regression notwithstanding, had multiple 45 second races under his belt as a 16 and 17 year old.
It's hard to say what his chances/trajectory is at this point. Seeing that he's going to Georgia, he's probably going to emerge as a viable long jumper who can sprint well a la Jarrion Lawson.
Idiot.
He's still in high school. At that age, as fast as he's run. A legal 10.13 by he way last week National Record. And a sub 45 relay leg. All legitimate.
Will he kick on? Who knows. But for now he is giving great attention to the sport.
So eff off you loser.
Agreed. It's like people are reaching here. Looking for anything to discount him.
Let's look at it this way - how many has athletes run a national wind legal HS only competition and run 20.5 (didn't run it at region or state against peak competition) while also long jumping 26+ and splitting 44.75ish on a 4x4?
It's pretty damn impressive.
