Despite the fraction of nut cases, the best job for a runner who wants a comfortable lifestyle is US Postal Service! They pay you good union wages to walk around for a modest number of hours per week with a huge fringe benefits packeage for what is nearly unskilled labor other than being able to read.
THe US postal service will not hire you unless you are one of these (in order) a minority, a woman, a veteran.
I fit none of the above. And if you don't, then don't even try.
OK I shouldn't make a blanket statement like that. I apologize and it's definitely not entirely accurate.
But meeting that criteria would certainly make it easier for you to get hired. And I do agree, that would be a sweet job.
