Why beginners HAVE TO listen to music while advanced CAN'T listen to music?

What a stupid thread this is. Listening to music when you run has nothing to do with talent level. Morons.

I think it's partly generational, back in my day, if you wanted to listen to music you needed to carry a clunky walkman that would definitely be detrimental to your workout. If we saw someone running with one, we assumed they were not serious. These days with this new fangled nano tech, I can't give you a good reason why you shouldn't listen to music while you run. But for no good reason I still look down people that listen to music while they run (and people who wear shorts over tights).

You mind will make the decision on it's own when it needs to concentrate more on the race. At some point, you might not be able to remember the last couple songs that played, but at other times the music makes it easier to disassociate from the pain of the race.

Back in the early 80s when I went on longer runs in the country, I would carry a cassette player with me. I would have to switch hands every so often because the thing was pretty heavy. Definitely got easier over the last 35 to 40 years to listen to music while running. Now I have a couple hundred songs on my shuffle. I can run close to a hundred miles before I hear the same song again. (about two weeks) Of course in the summer, I usually wear a radio on my arm so I can listen to my local MLB team.

One Jim Ryun documentary, Jim said he carried a mobile radio during his long runs because he got bored.

I enjoy running with music and I am almost at a sub 15 5k, it’s really not a big deal and when running high mileage it makes it more enjoyable, I could do it without and did for a few years but why should I make running feel as mundane as possible just to feel like I am above others?

Hello pot. So you basically make the same claim for running for music as you are refuting about 'advanced runners' who don't listen to music. Great logic my edgy friend.

Nobody gives a flying F who listens to music or not but you can take a lot more in and enjoy your thoughts and scenery without.

And listening to rage music during a race so you can run on pure hate is just so edgy. Just take 5 hr energy and Sudafed like all the cool kids.

Sometimes there's just a change in preference. I always used to run with music from start to finish. Then years later I just turn it on about 3/4 of the way. It revives me and adds enjoyment. Thanks to this post tomorrow I will listen from start to finish again. maybe I'm , and you, are missing something!

I cant handle music if im running any pace thats a bit painful... its like a sensory overload and just makes me feel worse.

look at any pro or semi pro racer man, no headphones in sight. At best youll see some 15:50 dude awkwardly come sprinting down the homestretch with headphones on but thats about it honestly. Any sort of music isnt for racing at all if youre anywhere close to elite

I used to not listen to music because I thought it slowed my pace, but now I realize I just wasn't good enough to run sub 6 pace for easy runs without focusing hard on pushing myself. Also, my high school coach does not allow us to have music on our runs, so I thought it was for a reason.

Slower runners are more likely to run with music compared to faster runners. Slower runners need to drown out the negative feelings and require the external motivation of music. Skilled runners don't require external motivation and don't want to mask how their body feels.

There are exceptions, some slow runners run without music, some fast runners run with music......

This is mostly dumb but has a grain of truth. I would correct it to say you are talking about the same runner.

If I simply wanted to go on a long slow run, I might bring music or a book to fill the time.

If I am doing a tempo run, I do want to be engaged in the moment and attuned to my body, and music can distract from that.

Running itself clears the head of mental detritus.

If you are a good runner, you don't listen to music, you MAKE music with each and every stride. In your cadence is the rhythm, your mechanics the harmony, your armswing the counterpoint.

Why would an advanced runner want to disassociate from the pain in a race? Oh, I'm not really here to race against other people and this pain is irritating. I know, Iet's listen to some music and the race will soon be over.
