All of the lists are bogus. It is impossible to make a list of "top" ultra runners in the world in an order because of the variation in distance in terrain, and some have different strengths. But if you had to pick even 10, no Sage would not be on it. There is a bunch of international guys who no one in NA knows about to go along with the guys like Killian, Xavier, Francois, etc. Walmsley has the most potential of any American. Then there are guys like Browning and Sharman (Born outside of US) who are top 10 at WSER every year and beat younger fast guys at 100s. The sport is too diverse and Sage's racing is not specified on any one distance.

Why do you geezers continue to bring up Browning and Sharman? These two guys have lined up for over a decade and have NEVER WON WSER... they just aren't good enough. Period. Walmsley won it in his third try. Jornet his second. Sharman is 0-12 and Browning is 0-8. Wake up, people, and stop sniffing your idols's junk. Francois is 0-1.

really? western states isn’t the essence of ultra running. it’s an american race for americans that occasionally elite international runners will race and will kick our @sses, with the exception of a small handful of elite Americans. (historically its only been one of two per year of elite Americans that beat elite Europeans racing wser) look at Ryan Sandes, Francois, Killian. and for browning? he’s a hardrock winner, even if he’s 0-8 states. sure it was easily xavier, and I’m not saying browning is a better runner, but he’s been extremely consistent in 100 milers and shouldn’t be completely disregarded. as someone else mentioned, it’s honestly a list of Europeans with possible walmsley due to EXCEPTIONAL performances at WSER and a handful of 50 milers

Historically:

1 & 2 are interchangeable and they are Yiannis Kouros & Ann Trason. I tend to put Ann as one since she excelled at the three main ultra disciplines while Yiannis only did so at two, granted Yiannis does still hold 5 world records including two set 30+ years ago, so there's a good argument for them both to be 1.

3-5 are all interchangeable and you could make a lot of arguments for them and probably include the likes of Killian, Don Ritchie, Jurek, Camille, Carpenter etc.

There is nobody close to Yiannis Kouros in the ranking.

Ann Trason is probably a good 2nd.

After that it gets a little more difficult to judge, especially when it comes to trail ultrarunning.

That's Coree Woltering, and calling him arrogant is incredibly inaccurate, as he's one of the nicest and most chill dudes in the sport

He has a sponsorship with TNF now, but got unlucky with sickness on his past few races (salmonella + food posioning) so hopefully he bounces back this year

How can you dik faces put a woman as top 10? Delusional ass$ kissers. She’s old and won when there were no competitive runners in the sport. You guys suck. You’re the same ass faces that vote Browning for Ultra runner of the year. He’s not elite. Just consistently good. Walmsley destroyed WS and is head and shoulders above everyone else, except for Francois, Kilian, and Xavier. Those guys are really good.
