Are we going to save time going from 5,000 to 3,000? Sure, like just over 5 minutes which doesn't help.
Are we going to stop performance enhancing drugs by eliminating one event for another? Nope.
Are we going to stop performance enhancing drugs in the events that we still have by eliminating the 5,000? Nope
Are we going to gain more of an audience for track and field by eliminating distance events? You may think so but I strongly disagree.
I have heard nothing here or from the IAAF that makes any sense.

This site is predominantly made up of distance runners. Have you guys lost your minds in that you want your sport to be contested LESS at the highest levels?

The answer is not to abolish events because athletes are taking performance enhancing drugs. If you do that then you will have to eliminate ALL the events. So, no track meet at all. That's how little sense this argument makes.
So let's eliminate all sports because there are drug cheats in every sport. There will be no cheating athletes competing in sport if you eliminate sports. This is beyond stupid.
Laura Muir.. is clearly a doper, watch her stride rate and how long she can hold it at any part of a 1500 or 3000m race, ive been watching this sport for too long, shes clearly on something and protected. Now that Mo Farah is running marathons and off the track. Anyone with half a brain can see whats going on. Hes got a point. Coe knows what hes doing...

There are a ton of sprinter who have been caught. Others have not been caught but are suspicious. Should we start eliminating sprint events? How does this make sense?
Clearly a troll thread, but Kenyans have long abandoned the 5000m with zero making the finals at the world’s in London 2017, let alone medal. And I think Eliud Kipchoge in Paris, 2003 was one of the last Kenyans to win a global 5000m. So if this was targeted at Kenyans, jokes on you.

Like taking money out of it would do anything ???. Not sure about you, but the glory of winning Olympic gold for you and your nation is worth more than all the money. I know if I had a choice between a million dollars and winning gold at the Olympics. I'd choose the Olympic gold.

Zatopek would never medal. He literally said running isn't like figure skating. He would be in trouble if they bought in synchronized or rhythmic running.

Same sub-12:50 5000m guys will race 3000m sub-7:30. 5000m & 10000m are bad for tv and bad for fans at the stadium. IAAF are thinking correctly. Next, IAAF needs to consider adding old high school and old college events from 1950's. Athletes used to race 220 yard dash on curve, 220 yard dash straightaway and 220 low hurdles. If IAAF want to get young fans excited: add 200m dash straightaway and add 200m low hurdles.
The 5000 & 10000 can be great television when they actually show the race. When they cut away every 30 seconds to a field event highlight or some other crap it makes for terrible TV. If you never see the moves or surges or give a chance for the drama to build there is no chance even avid fans will enjoy broadcast. I am sick of hearing about how terrible the distance races are for TV when broadcast companies do such a god awful job.
People spend hours watching the Tour de France year after year even when few Americans are competitive. The viewers could enjoy 12 to 30 minutes of running to if the coverage were not complete garbage. And biking is not more exciting than track.

Once Jakob started giving the EPO cheats a run for their money, the people behind this whole mess decided to go all in and hand out more money to grease the skids that have allowed rampant cheating by certain peoples and nations. All of a sudden the Epopians were cruising to sub 13:50 times. A few guys on the board predicted this would happen and they were right. It will be even worse this year with E. Africans and certain other third worlders producing ridiculous performances.
Good first move by Coe but a lot more needs to be done. Road racing is a joke too. The E. Africans have a lot of talented people, but kill drug use and the total domination disappears.
Right now Coe and crew are fighting an uphill battle. The forces behind this cheating and a lot of other things in the world dedicated to attacking the West in literally all areas are on their hind legs and screaming. Do some detective work.

Seb Coe knows what he is doing. From annual World XC to biennial, from 5000m and 10000m to maybe the 3k, maybe not, pretty soon they'll reach the optimal ratings event for track and field, in which we have the pleasure of watching the:
