Agreed that the 5000m is great because so many hobby joggers have done a 5k fun run. They sweat their asses off in 26min or 30 min or something 5km races, get on the couch and watch someone drop a 12:58 and their jaw drops at how an athlete cut their PB in half.
won't this hurt your wife since it will increase the amount of people running the 3000m, thus lowering your wife's relative performance?
Arguably, the marquee race of the entire year was the Brussels 5000m last year.
Blame Seb Coe. He never ran a good 5000m, not really that good a 3000m either. He'd probably not mind even if they nixed that one. And he has no desire for the 10000m.

A question and a comment from a slow guy like myself.
1) Are they saying that there just won't be a diamond league title for the 5000m/10000m, or that they are actually barred for having an open 5000m/10000m at any Diamond League meet?
2) I think that this, coupled with the tougher IAAF standard in the 10000m, will all but kill the event off within a couple Olympic cycles.

if you don't like the 3000m that's fine, but please don't project your prejudice onto others. apart from anything else, it devalues your attempt to position yourself as a journalist. you know, that balance of ideas thing where you present the pros and cons of a story and let readers decide for themselves. drum banging is for bloggers.

Agreed. If the 10k goes they should replace it with a road half-marathon. If the 5k drops to 3k then they should replace it with a cross-country run of around 8k.

I used too much hyperbole. I pulled a rojo. 3k means something but not as much as 5000.
And I agree with the poster above that the top 5,000 in Brussels last year was the top distance event on the circuit. People will be talking about it for years. 6 extra minutes of running (where there could be commercial breaks which are needed for TV) is not a bad thing.
With a 3k, you'd better not take a commercial.

this is a good decision , the next step is to phase out the 10k and Steeple . After a few years , it will be forgotten like people who cried about losing modern pentathlon.
Attention spans are shaping the world. The bigger tragedy is that we go 8K all season then 10K at nationals. What's the deal there?

No. Even people who run could not name the winner of Brussels 5k , or name his name even if you held his picture in
front.
A TV producer would present the 3000 by showing first 600 m , commercial break, than last 600 m . that would be around 3 minutes of coverage , which is a lot for TV.

Phasing out the steeple and 10,000 makes sense.
For the steeplechase, it complicates building a new track anywhere.
You have to design that pit inside or outside for a single event that most people never try to run or follow.
Then get those barriers.
Get rid of the track 10,000 and put in a 12K Cross country event.
Keep the 5,000 and run it at these DL meets, though.

Ending the 5 and 10 is a complete travesty.
There is still a modern pentathlon. It's still an olympic sport. Maybe you are thinking of the track pentathlon? We no longer have a tug-of war in any track and field.

If tv time is the consideration then just don’t broadcast the event. You can still stage it.
I bet you it takes longer to stage any of the jump and field events than to run the 10k
I'm so tired of hearing people complain about the 10k at the olympics. A non-elite track 10k is generally a tough watch, but at the olympic level it might be my favorite event. There's time for drama and tension to build in a way that can't happen in shorter events. I might just be a weird runner, but the London 2012 10k remains one of the most emotionally gripping, intense events I have ever watched.

If you´re going to have XC in the Olympics then it has to something that resembles obstacle racing. There is no way they will have something like the WC race courses - well manicured golf courses or horse race tracks. Otherwise you will just replce something that people think is unwatchable (10000) with something equally unwatchable.
