I've driven that time through the night and more to many triathlons. Never a problem. Everybody in the sport does it and says nothing of it. And come to think of it, we somehow manage to do three events, not just one.

Airbnb it ?
I would encourage doing the cheaper hotel 30-40 mins away option considering the logistics you described. That’s what I have done for several marathons to save money even with having to rent a car (which it doesn’t seem like you’d have to do). I usually have my wife to drive the morning of but 30-40 mins is not bad for you to drive. I did that once and was fine.
Driving will hurt performance. Aside of being mentally tired, your legs will be tight from driving.
Drive down the day before and park near the start. I have done it before and it worked out great. You can wake up later and be fresh for the run. Even if you don't get a great night of sleep, everyone says that the night before the night before that matters.

I sleep in my car before races. Probably did that over 150 times.
What!?!? Can you describe the circumstances? What's your setup? Why do you sleep in your car over camping or something slightly less cramped?
Usually just find the nearest Walmart and recline the seat. I sleep great with the only occasional problem being some idiot squeeling tires at 3 in the morning or the trash collection truck rumbling by. I've even parked right by the start of a race on a side street. Some years I race 30-40 times so it is a huge savings on hotels. A bonus is if there is an Anytime fitness nearby. I'm 5'8 and never felt cramped. Just slide the seat back as far as it goes and recline the seat.
