A little off the subject, but I was running (in my long pants) waaay up the mountain over the wknd when a guy in short shorts came up right ahead of me from a side trail. **Short** shorts. No tights. Define “real shorts.” He had a running pack on, so this wasn’t road racing gear. I am not making this up. We were a good 3K vertical ft from any start point.

Having seen what European men wear to go swimming (hint: a lot less fabric than you’d see poolside in the US), I’m genuinely curious. Why short shorts when regular shorts or long pants would work just as well?

Don't listen to this guy. I've tried tights over shorts and it's just too uncomfortable.

...but have you tried shorts under skin over tights? Sometimes I go without the tights, especially if it's so cold that shrinkage takes care of any imbalances that could disrupt my gait.

Here in NY, it's such a prevalent part of street culture and the fashion industry (seriously, it's hard not to miss in below 50º) that I've gotten more used to it. Now when I see a guy in just tights, it's a bit jarring. Them chicken legs really stand out.

I don't know what part of "NY" you're limiting yourself to, but you're obviously not running in Manhattan among the real runners.

I have done the experiment:

I wear shorts over my tights cause there is a hole in the bum of one pair.

The other pair, I don't wear shorts over them.

It is faster not to wear shorts

I wear tights this time of the year.

This morning it was 14F out.

Wearing shorts over tights is a terrible idea. It's like wearing shorts over pants.
