Jim is a great runner up to 50 miles. But 100 mile races in the mountains is a different ballgame and he has no clue how to play that.

As I said in the UTMB post... There is a big difference between a flat road marathon and a high altitude mountain 100. You get in trouble in the mountains and you cant just step off the course and get a ride back to your car. Sometimes you are 5 to 6 miles (or more) from the next aid station. When your exposed to rain, possible snow, freezing temps and you are doing so on technical trail for hours and hours and hours (spare me the Boston Marathon weather this year crap...that was 3 hours at most) it's a whole different ball game.
Of course he would beat most of us on shorter courses. Because he is a good runner. But I would line up with him any time in a 100 miler. Chance that I win are at least 50%.

I think in the pre race interview he said after WS, he did a 20 mile week, then an 80 mile week, then was training again. He said he knew it wasn't smart, but "sometimes you have to take a gamble."
Well the gamble didn't pay off.
Thanks for that update, true not a smart move. Browning ran well at WS and cam back and won Hardrock (Xavier DQed), but he still ran well and would have been 2nd. I think he basically did nothing between races, as you will have to recover and you will not loose fitness that fast. Walmsley perhaps should have rested for 4 weeks and then trained for 4 weeks with a 2 wet taper. Might have played put better, but we will never know.

Maybe Jim's main problem is, that he does not know how to train.
He is too insecure to take some time off after a big race.

I saw Jim run at WS this year, an awesome display of running on a very difficult/hot day. I dont know him of course but my guess is that he did not allow enough time to recover from WS before doing his build up for UTMB in Silverton Colorado. I know these elite runners recover faster than mere mortals, but he may have over cooked himself training in Silverton.i
My take:
WS was one of the greatest runners ever by a USA runner. I think everyone-Jim included- didn’t realize the toll it took on his body. He needs to rest up and be ready for more greatness. ????

Jim isn't a win big or go home guy. He consistently struggles against competition. I can understand DNFing because of injury, but Jim lacks perseverance and quits because of things real Champions can push through to actually win. Look at the resumes of guys like Xavier and Kilian as examples of real Champions.
Yeah I'm not much into the mind over body thing. If I got pneumonia or feeling nauseous puking and getting the trots I'm quitting fight another day. I'm not a soldier in WWIII and I got to make it to the finish line by 0600 or I'm dead, and even then you aren't going to win from 60th place chasing a guy that's healthy.

Agreed, when things click he's a real joy to watch. Imho he should have skipped UTMB after the phenomenal WS (like D'Haene) but the event is too big for his sponsors to not show off.
I'm curious to see if he will head to Comrades and road marathons or will give UTMB another try.

He's said he wants to do Comrades next year and not WS. And he said he might take a shot at a half-marathon to get an Olympic Trials qualifier but didn't seem that committed to that.
But that was all before whatever happened at UTMB.

Walmsley is super talented ultrarunner but as many said above, his problems are in his head. He can only time trial 100 miles from the lead. Anytime, he falls behind, through whatever mishaps, he starts falling mentally apart... There is a reason while he only does great in the U.S. where you are allowed pacers on courses. Without them he is utterly lost, mentally I mean. Physically, he is on another level.
If he could overcome it somehow, he'd be unbeatable. I still root for him, amazing runner;)

You surely must be talking about Zach Miller that's the guy, in my mind who puts it all on the line in ultras;)
As the prize money and sponsorship money in ultra running has gone up... so has the number of DNFs among elite runners falling behind in major races. Live to fight another (prize money) day is just common sense.
Injuries aside, the increased number of elite drops in the biggest races can't all be explained by that. If there really was an increased number of elite race day injuries too... that would be a much debated fact in itself by now.
Has there been any official explanation of Walmsley's DNF so far?
Kilian: got stung by a bee, he's alergic, had bad reaction
Hernando: hurt his ankle
Tollefson: sustained a deep cut from a fall
Miller: took a fall, I think he hurt a knee
