There are literaly hundreds of soccer players that can do sub 11. What the hell are a few NFLers going to do? They're overhyped but they're really not that good.

Not to mention these guys spend years packing on as much muscle mass (a lot of which is dead weight in a pure sprint) as possible in order to be able to survive in the NFL. Consider that Walker was 6'1" and 225, and Gatlin is 6'1" and 183. What's Gatin's best 100m time if he straps on a 40 lb meat suit? If these guys trained exclusively for 100m and dropped 20 lbs of upper body mass, they're probably all under 10.

Sanders has 30 lbs on Gemili. Because he played in the NFL. This isn't hard to figure out.

American football players have nothing to do all winter and spring, thus they are encouraged to run track. A young soccer talent will play year round so they are unlikely to do track. However I would still agree that top NFL running backs are faster over 100m than anyone else. I am just saying not all soccer players are "distance" athletes.

and former NFL player Jim Hines would smoke him, who ran 9.95 on a dirt/gravel track...

as well as bob hayes ( dirt and gravel track)

the majority of football players with their stronger lower mechanics and high school and college track experience would smoke the majority of soccer players....It wouldn't be close. too much lower power and ground force like a cheetah. Plus there mechanics as track sprinters are natural because they have to carry a ball pumping their arms hard back and forward.

Show me a list of 100 soccers players running 10 seconds.....I just showed you a list of 100 footballers who do that, and that was just a top 100 list!

Actually I think I might have googled the wrong Gemili. You're not talking about Adam Gimli, the sprinter who made 12 total appearances in the Isthmian League as your example of a "soccer player" that could outsprint a football player are you? If so, that would be an incredibly inane point.

Too often on letsrun conversations regarding NFL elite sprinters goes from Bob Hayes to Willie Gault to Herschel Walker. Don't forget 1976 4x100m Olympic gold medalist, Johnny "Lam" Jones. University of Texas & NY/NJ Jets.

I agree with both premises due to probability and statistics. In the US, boys play football more than any other sport. It would stand to reason that the best athletes end up in football. If you train a defensive back, running back or receiver for a sprint event and have them decrease their bulk, they would probably be extremely competitive on the track. Across the globe, no sport has more participation, money and publicity than soccer. It would stand to reason that the world's best athletes end up in soccer. A friend of mine from high school who played soccer and ran some track (was nothing special), didn't participate in organized sports in college, and started running longer distance after college won a marathon and got an article in Runners World.

Hard to respond because I'm laughing as I'm typing, but that guy ran 9.95 in Mexico City. Gimme a break.

Your list has no one that is actually fast. Please find someone faster than Gemili and then we can discuss.

I think you already know that soccer players don't have the time or care for any vain 100 meter sprint times. When one of them decides to do it, like Gemili, football players can't compare. If you're willing to continue believing in your fantasy then good for you. Whatever makes you happy.

Yes. I believe weight makes a difference in sprinting. I guess I didn't even realize that was debatable. Sanders carried 2.71 lbs per inch of height. I just checked some of the more well-known 100m guys and they seem to average around 2.5 lbs/inch*. If Sanders were 2.5 lbs/inch, he'd be around 183. I would think carrying 15 fewer lbs has got to be worth and extra 1/4 second or so over 100m.

*Bolt seems to be an outlier at 2.68 lbs/inch, but he was quite tall.

For comparisons sake you should demonstrate what a sprinter playing football looks like. The best example is Trindon Holiday. Finished between Gay and Dix at the 2007 Track and Field Championships in 10.07. Ran 10.00 in another race, ran 6.19 in the 55m indoors in 2005, fastest in the nation. Unfortunately he was built like a sprinter (5'5.25", 169#), so his NFL was short but bright (multiple TD returns), but also would get blown up (even by a punter), which led to his short career. Athletes in the NFL carry 20-30# of muscle to withstand the beating ones body takes playing a game with large angry men. If you take 20# of bulk off of a free safety that runs a 4.4-4.5 40, you get a world class sprinter.

Exactly. Conversely, if you take a world class 9.85 sprinter and put the necessary 15-20 lbs of muscle on him that he'd need to have a chance of breaking a tackle, he be running 10+ seconds.

Absolutely. And if you take 400 pounds off of a sumo wrestler he'd be able to go 6.3

Walker made the NCAA 100m finals and had a 10.23 PR, what HS kids were running that in the 80's?

Bob Hayes ran a 10.06 on a dirt track some 55ish years ago. And, he would be the fastest NFL today. And, he twice ran the 200m WR at 20.5.

No soccer players are running with these footballers who were also sprinters.
