I remember reading that Pre met with Bill Rodgers (perhaps before the '75 Boston Marathon??) and gave him a prototype Nike racing flat to use.
Any truth to this? Did he run Boston in them? Does Bill still have those shoes? Imagine what those would fetch on e-Bay!!!
According to Bill Rodgers it is. I read it in one of the runnersworld books. Ive seen it a couple times.
From what Ive read he passed on Nike's too Shorter and Rogers. Not sure who else.

The USA XC champs was held in Chicago in '72. That was the year Cusack ran off the course.
Yeah, 1972 AAU was held in Washington Park in Chicago (near University of Chicago). I was there. Don't recall Cusack running off course, but with 3-4 inches of wet snow, it may have well happened. As I recall, Shorter and the Florida TC Olympians dominated the top places.
Virgin claimed he outleaned Tracy McDonald of Bowling Green at the chute for 12th, but due to "inefficient organization" he ended up 13th.
I recall a lot of people being stunned that a high school kid could fare so well against the big boys in an Olympic year.

What happened was Cusack crossed the line first but it was determined that he missed a short loop within the last 1/2 mile and he was moved back to 4th with Shorter given first place. At the time he had a lead which most thought he would have held to the finish.
At the time I don't think Virgin had committed and the college scouts were breathing heavy over his performance.
