There are some real morans on this site who obviously don't know squat about training, racing, and peaking. Even Edwin Moses, who won 122 consecutive 400 meter hurdles races over a decade, would have lost some races, at some distances, if he had entered them during training stretches where he wasn't looking at TIME, but at TRAINING VALUE (mind and body).
In our sport many athletes have chosen to compete very little, because if they had entered certain races, they knew they would not "produce" as if they were in peak racing shape. To not perform on the big stage in the eyes of the morans who don't know squat about their training means an athlete must endure undue, uninformed criticism.
Maybe Centro will never be at the top of his game again. Maybe Centro will be jaw-dropping great very soon. We're not privy to the nuts and bolts of his master plan. I'm more than willing to assume that he, and Alberto, and Matt Sr know what they're doing.
My question is does he have any training partners with his current situation. That helps immensely at any level.
It's also possible that he has lost the spark and is just riding out his contract.

How is it his former group? He is still coached by both alberto and his Dad.
He goes to training camps with engels and Jenkins, and I assume Murphy would be in that group if he wasn't racing overseas.
Since relocating, he has performed much better than he did the year before he relocated. Not sure where you are getting that.

Yeah but they're not at his level. One is Sam Penzenstadler who was a sub 4 guy in college and all american, but not centro level.
He does go to altitude training camps with the other NOP guys, though

Give Sam some love. Since college he has improved to 3:57.80 outdoors and 3:57.29 indoors. Those date to 2016, but they're post-collegiate. Yeah, they're not Centro times AT HIS BEST, but Sam is probably a very worthy training partner talent-wise for Centro.
This made me smile. Centro is a legend. Wire-to-wire Olympic 1500m champ. If he doesn't do more than that, he is still a legend.

One thing I am surprised nobody has mentioned is what happened when he was in Oz. He enters two meets. Runs the first AFTER doing a workout that day and runs terribly. Is still officially entered in the 2nd meet right up until the day before the meet. This meet charges people to attend (a rarity in track here due to low turnouts generally). A heap of people show up to see him run. He pulls out and heads back home, unbeknownst to nearly all the people who turned up and paid money simply to see him! No word on social media before or after as to why, no explanation, no apology on his social media feed! I'm from Oz yet I cheered as loudly as anyone when he won the OG 1500 as I admire his bravery and belief to always put himself in a position to go for the win but he lost me as a fan that night (and probably lost a few others too :( A shame he didn't just turn up and do the rounds for the fans as per the pics above, or at least put out an explanation like tennis players do when they pull out of a tournament knowing people have paid to see him. Thoughts?

Yes. However, there is a confounding variable which NOBODY has sniffed, unsurprisingly given this sad board is replete with mental midgets.
Matthew Centrowitz has certainly retained his ties with Sal, but MATT Centrowitz (his vaunted father) has essentially taken over his daily training.
His father's training "philosophy" is old-school, hard/long-run, good-work.... in direct contrast to Sal's training "science," which is (at least ostensibly) formulated and enacted according to various reliable physiological and anatomical findings. Father Matt is simply an incompetent, manic, angry ogre -- just watch his Workout Wednesday. He does little to justify the workout, and actually says he is "not too scientific at this point in the season." Ha!!! Also, I have run for Matt Centrowitz. He produces his training with whimsical intuitions rooted in his days at Oregon. The team-attrition rate is literally >75%. Nobody from my generation ran all four years.

If Matthew continues to trust his father's inadequate and mostly baseless workout, run, recovery, nutritional intuitions, probably at the expense of Sal's clearly successful training and proximity, mediocre results will keep ensuing.

You do know that Centro, Jr. was being coached already by his father and that both Centro, Sr. and Salazar were and are involved in his coaching.
