Is the facebook data privacy issue overhyped?

Internet nowadays is incredibly dangerous place. Personal privacy has been lost, leaving us at risk from shady individuals, companies and security agencies. But there are some tools that can help to keep the data safe. Personally I deleted my Facebook accountand now I browse the Web only with vpn or private proxy server. I have fineproxy server, https://buy.fineproxy.org/eng/ and it completely meets my needs. Stay vigilant and safe.

How fortuitous that you just happened to stumble upon this thread while perusing page 97 of the message board so that you could pass along this advertisement..er...I mean personal experience.

It is severely under hyped. We don't think of giving information to Facebook when we are texting friends, but that's exactly what you are doing. We think that deleting a photo from Facebook means it is gone. It is not. Facebook keeps data forever, even if you delete it. It's not that hard for the data to get in the wrong hands.

If you have been dating someone a while there is a good chance you know their passwords or at least their security answers and probably have access to their phone. That is enough information to request history from Facebook. With that you could easily read every message your current partner sent to previous (or other current) partners.

It's in their privacy policy. Anything you type in Facebook or their texting app, Messenger is saved.

Right, but just to messages through FB messenger. Not to texts in general.

Of course they save the things that you input directly into FB. Why would anyone think that they weren't?

FB is free, so if I post about liking about running stuff, then I see ads for running stuff I'm totally OK with that. Heck I'd rather see ads for stuff I like and will use over stuff I wont.
