What 5k times are needed to impress Hobby Joggers in your area?

depends largely on age and gender of the runner. a 22 minute 5k is not impressive for a 25 year old man, but it certainly is for a 65 year old woman.

Interesting. Only one person (Sammy Kipketer - 12:59.5 in 2000 and 12:59.6 in 2001) has ever broken 13:00 in a 5K (note the OP asked for 5K NOT 5000m), so I guess "no one" besides Sammy is worthy of any respect.

Even if you were ignorant and referring to track times, may I remind you that Olympic Silver Medalist Paul Chelimo has a 5000m PR of 13:03.90. Not impressed with Chelimo? Doubt he cares.

If 5k is too easy you arent running hard enough.

In UK you normally need 16-18 to finish 1st in Parkrun.

25 years ago I was 61st in local 5km race on 16:41 it and only had about 300 entries. You'd need 30-31 to win even a local 10km in local Greater Manchester races.

People reckon there see more races but standard at club bevel has plummeted away from elites.

Anything under 20 min for 5k will win stuff here.

A 5-HR marathon is not in the bottom 10% of finishers. I doubt it's even in the bottom quartile or tercile

Colorado here so usually need something in the 15:xx range at elevation to win, 14:xx for more notable road races. Some really small ones with like 50 people occassionally won in 16:xx, but oftentimes a good local guys shows up and tempos 15 high/16 low at those.

so you're saying, 5000 meters and 5 kilometers are not same distance? interesting, I never thought about it this way.

Where I am the "St Patrick's Day 5k" this weekend had 15 runners under 15:00, 40 runners under 16:00 and 75 runners under 17:00.

Looking at your benchmark, 19:59 got 197th place out of 1404 runners (86th percentile).

Southern California, sub 15k.

I'm impressed when someone runs faster than me.

I would say 18:30 would be in the top 10% for even the most competitive races and win the least competitive.

They don't know that. It's only 3 miles! How hard could it be? My cousin has finished 6 marathons! Now there's an athlete!

Any mention of pace starting with 7.

7:xx race/easy/long/tempo/whatever. 7 is the holy grail of hobby jogger pace.

6:xx and faster is elite level.

Probably about 10 years ago I ran a 5k in my town that used to attract a van load of Africans from nyc and be quite competitive. I ran ~14:20 and came in 11th. I was stoked to run a new pr, but people I knew told me they were sorry and that I probably could have won if those Kenyans weren’t there.

This last year I won our corporate park’s silly annual 5k with a blistering 18:40 and everyone at work was amazed at how fast I was.

People don’t understand running.
