Why did you quit running?

I'm in programming, and unless you spend 8 hours of work a day + another 12 hours programming "for fun" on the side, you're a bad programmer who is unemployable. According to Mark Cuban and just about every other d1ck out there in leadership.

So it's a choice of joining the other fat fvcks and keeping a job, or getting fired for doing the minimum to stay healthy.

BTW, have you seen the manboobs on Zuckerberg? What a complete d1ck.

Never definitely diagnosed. Best guess, a partial tear at the insertion of the peroneus brevis (lateral arch). Not a Jones fracture.

Currently working with a podiatrist who might get the foot manageable (though not actually "healed"). Unfortunately, a bad hernia repair some years ago means that running may still be a no-go, even if I get past the foot problem.

Thanks for sharing, and sorry to hear that. Wow, missing it 45 years later -- makes me feel less crazy missing it every day when I am injured. Pulling for you that perhaps this podiatrist can get you back into it. I'm sure you've thought of this years ago, but just to mention I'm on an 8 week run/walk program rehabbing ankle injury ( wk 1, 1 minute walk/1 m run intervals, then moving up to 2 min run/1 walk, etc) and I've been surprised at how satisfying it's been -- not as satisfying as a full 30min run of course, but at least I get out into the fresh air, get some movement, sun, etc.

Exactly the kind of thing I was thinking about, assuming things go very well. I have no real interest in long, steady (which would mean slow) running at this point--I've already walked marathons under five hours, so "running" one in four hours-plus has no appeal. An Igloi-esque mix of different, mostly short, distances at different speeds sounds like it could be a lot of fun, though.

Honestly, I saw a video of a buddy who was running a race with his shirt off. Upper ribs showing, etc, he was so thin. I was that thin. I was only a 16:50's 5k guy and I was just staying at that speed. I could work REALLY hard and get below 17, or I could run 25 miles a week and cruise to a 17:15. I ran 17:15 one day barely sweating, saw that video, and realized I'm doing all this work to not even be fast, to look like crap, and it's not worth the amount of time and injuries, etc. I quit cold turkey, hit the gym and have been doing that for the last 5-6 months. Gained weight, look much better, run about 5-8 miles a week if I feel like it.

Injuries and getting sick when in good shape lead to a lot of frustration and running competitively was just too stressful, mostly from self imposed pressure and taking it too seriously, and no longer fun.

Took up powerlifting and gained 40lbs, probably a little too chunky to get back into it but the occasional 3-5 mile run is enjoyable

Competitive running is inherently selfish. I'm not wiling to spend the needed time and effort to do it anymore. I run much less, in fact only enough for the health benefits. My children are my priority. I certainly don't miss the constant fatigue and soreness either.

I still run, but very little, maybe 10-15 miles a week, almost exclusively with my wife (who still trains competitively as a master's runner) and our dog (held by me) and our two kids (in stroller, which she pushes). I stopped running briefly when I was in grad school and for the first time since before puberty, I went more than a week or two with no running. I was ASTOUNDED at how much better I felt. I did a lot of pushups and bodyweight squats in my office to keep limber and that was it. Once I had more time, I just never really got back to using it on running. I lift weights now and I look and feel better. I still keep my aerobic fitness up, running as I said above, and I bike the 2 miles to work, home for lunch, back to work, then back home every day. I'm not "a runner" any more, but I'm really happy with where I'm at. Still a fan of the sport, just not a part of it.

I quit after finding Lets Run because all my dreams became a reality.

Seriously though, grad school, kids, life and then a hip labrum tear. I can run again, not sure how intensely yet, but I haven't gotten back into it. As another said, kids are the priority and most of my running is with them now.

I know a guy that has as many kids as I do that still runs, does ironmans, etc, but I'd rather know my kids and make an intentional impact in their lives than be competitive.

You never know if you've quit running for good unless you've sustained a debilitating injury that physically prevents you from running.

I've quit running "for good" a few times.

I competed at a high level for a few years after college.

Once I determined that I wasn't going to try and race at that level anymore or go for PRs anymore, I totally stopped running.

There didn't seem to be any point to make a half effort at running to go slower.

Then some local road race comes up that you think about doing for fun and you run a few times a week and jump in.

Then life happens and you get a job where you would have to go out of your way to find time to run and you pass on that.

But would still run a little.

Then got a serious girlfriend and had no time to work and see her all the time.

Then got a job where I could run during my lunch break and got back into running for two years.

Then hurt my achilles pushing it too much in a race where I should have dropped out.

At that point, I quit "for good" again.

But a few years later rehabbed it and did some more running.

Then would schedule a race now and then but would always hurt something.

Now the key to running a few times a week is to not schedule any races.

This is the only place on earth where people discuss pro and collegiate runners.

Some people don’t run but coach and use the boards to gather ideas.

Sometimes one just can't quit. Many years ago after a complete quad failure from over training I was crippled for several weeks; decided to quit running altogether. Went into severe depression and was subsequently put on medication by my physician . At the six month follow-up he instructed me to resume running saying it would do more for me than anything modern medicine could do. Took a year and a half to get back into it regularly. Have since suffered torn hamstring tendons, plantar fa.. (sp), and insertional calcific tendinosis. Still can't quit. The body self -heals, just takes time. They can have my shoes when they pry them from my cold dead body.

I had a doctor tell me that former endurance athletes who worked out a significant amount were prone to depression when they stopped training. Maybe someone out there can find some sources to back that up.
