Other famous Lowell grads include Carol Channing, Supreme Ct Justice Stephen Breyer, and Eric Cornell (Nobel prize winner).
my Mom was in the same year as Johnny Mathis at Galileo, something like 15 years before OJ brightened the skie there.
Andy coaches at Sacred Heart.
Andy coaches at Lowell.
Both Andies are Lowell alums.

Andy Chan would be a real loss however he is in the CCS section not SF section and he works for a private school.
Theyre both great coaches, but are you suggesting Leong wouldnt be a real loss just b/c he's in the public AAA section? How often do you find a coach who's willing to put as much time and energy into a public school team for 15 years as he has?
Putting time and energy in does not make a great coach, results at the state level does.
For your information, he did get results at the state level. 3 Cross Country medals, 2 track medals. Not only that, he got results at the national level too: DMR-ranked 5th in the nation, 2 1-milers, 2 2-milers and 4x1600 ranked in track & field news.

and that's not an easy task given the crummy condition of sports in SF public schools.
What year was that? For the 5th best DMR in the Nation
So let me get this straight, this PE teacher named Michael Prutz just decided that he wanted to coach the XC team and that it wasn't fair that the head coaching job was occupied by an off campus coach? That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. I guess Prutz doesn't care if the man is the best coach in the state... he is so selfish that he would actually take the job from the deserving coach against the will the kids at the school. Now that is absolutely messed up, if this happened to my school, there would be mass-scale team boycotts. If my coach was forced out, I would quit and run places unattached.
"I am a passionate runner and believe that I can offer Lowell runners the motivation, drive, enthusiasm and dedication which they deserve," Prutz said.
and Leong isn't? Prutz must be a huge jackass.
Children this is the way the world works if you want a job go and get don't sit on your ass learn from Prutz.
This is the reason the Andy is not recieving the kind of support one would expect from adminstration folk. This is from the story in the Lowell HS newspaper.
"Even though I was motivated to help win back Andy’s position, I was pessimistic. Andy has had conflicts with many past runners and at times, runners have been afraid of him for his honest criticism. I expected only track and cross-country team members would sign the petition or approach school administrators and faculty about the situation."

tsk tsk. i was once called a "pathetic" runner by james thomas (former XC coach), as part of some critical analysis of my running, but it didnt bother me--and i didnt even go to Lowell!
if you want touchy feely coaches, join the home economics class.

Gimme a break. If the administration was that unhappy with Andy, what were they doing while he was leading the team for over 15 years??? If no one else wanted the position all that time, you've got further testimony to his dedication to the team.
This situation with Putz (what an approprite name, eh?) piping up that since he is actually a Lowell faculty member and so therefore should have first rights of refusal re: coaching XC is downright absurd...this is a program that is not broken and has no need for fixing. Andy Leong is as deeply dedicated as it gets...he is an absolute unsung hero...he's certainly not doing it for the money or the power...just a committed guy that has a desire to help his alma mater recognize success while elevating the self esteem of many a scholar athlete.
I have known Andy for more than twenty years. We were college teamates on the track and cross country teams at San Francisco State University. Andy was not one of the fast guys but he was 110% dedicated come hell or high water...always impressed me. This guy Putz who wants to dismiss all of the efforts of Andy Leong and Coach thomas before him obviously doesn't get it...doesn't understand a single god damned thing about coaching. The number one premise in coaching is being self-less...this Putz character however is obviously self-ish. Restore Andy Leong and let the Lowell high school cross country machine continue to work its magic...a dignified Putz would request the honor/favor of being appointed assitant to Mr Leong at best.

ive got a race i organize where proceeds go to the lowell XC and track team. i never went to lowell (ran for wash--go eagles!?), but appreciate the strong running tradition lowell has established over the years, even before andy took over. when i was told about this last month, i decided that proceeds will instead be directly entirely to the track team only, not XC. dont want to throw decent money at a program they are trying to ruin.
when i was running in high school, we relied on 'Mister'--also an off campus coach of sorts--more than we did on our official XC coach who was a teacher. Clearly, being a teacher doesnt make you qualified to be a coach.
Who is trying to ruin what it is you that is taking money away from XC but your right 22nd in the state XC is not worth sending money too.
When did it not become the norm that PE teachers coach? It was standard when I was a kid. I think I had only one coach that taught and it was a history class for football players. All of our other coaches were PE teachers it was a standard method of keeping teachers and coaches. Just maybe this is what it is really about. And Andy has always come off as a half bubble off center, a little too intense with kids that just are not very talented.
taught a real class
me got to say something too wrote:

Talent has nothing to do with it. The kid with all the talent in the world deserves the same amount of attention as the kid with no talent. You cannot blame the kid for lacking natural ability.

You are brilliant. So how low can you rank in the state before any financial support should be cut off? 10th? 15th? 20th? According to your philosophy, all financial support for XC programs in the state of California should be allocated to less than 22 high schools.
