Foot strike in elites, actually running 'fast', is a dynamic sweep backward, relative to the forward motion of their COG. The common definition of heelstriker is for those that have poor running biomechanics, by inducing a bifurcation in the dynamics of that sweep, commonly referred to as 'braking'. Proper mechanics requires the foot plant in the stance phase to be loading body mass forward of the ankle; thus no heel loading, thus no 'braking'. A still photo taken prior to ground touch cannot reveal the dynamics of that sweep. Even a still photo, where a non-zero drop shoe appears to first come into contact with the ground at the heel of the shoe, cannot reveal what is actually going on thru the dynamics of the sweep, as it obviously reveals no mass-loading information .
