Gwen Jorgenson just announced on her Instagram that she is switching to the marathon, saying her new goal is Olympic gold. Thoughts ? She ran a 2:41 at last year's NY marathon 2 months after winning Rio, presumably after time off. How fast do you think she will run only focusing on running ?

I think she has a 2:26 in her.

I don't believe it. That would be like Michael Jordan quitting basketball at the height of his career to play minor-league baseball.

Her objective, as per Twitter, is to win gold in Tokyo. This is, of course, a ridiculous goal. For a gold medal to be a realistic possibility, Gwen would have to be significantly more talented than any American female marathoner currently competing.

I don't think Jordan Hasay legitimately believes she has a shot at winning in Tokyo, and Jordan is almost certainly far faster now than Gwen ever will be, even with marathon-specific training.

If she wants to even make the team, she'll have to beat Jordan Hasay, Molly Huddle, Amy Hastings, Allie Kieffer, Sara Hall, Kellyn Taylor, and more. I feel like she doesn't have the background necessary to succeed at that level, and if she tries to suddenly train at Jordan Hasay's level, she runs the risk of getting injured. It's conceivable that she would make the team, but it's bizarre for her to set her sights on Olympic gold in 2020.

A year ago most of those names she'd have to beat would be part of a quality troll post, think about that for a second.

This result shows her potential. Jordan only beat her by 24 seconds and she beat Sara Hall. And she had just won the gold in Rio only 1.5 months previously.

Jordan's 10k PR is about 2% faster the Jorgensen ran in an open road race in Australia on non-specific (triathalon) training in 2014. I wouldn't really call that "far faster than she'll ever be" until we see some running specific training.
