Honestly, i think this is the answer. The other answer about biking making it impossible to run correctly is clearly wrong, because the elites have good running form.

Look at the average plodder in the last 10k of a marathon and there's a good chance you'll see some pretty terrible form too. Same in any other sport - the elites generally have good form and the non-elites either don't or can't maintain it when fatigued. Triathlon is a bit special in that there are very few genuine elite athletes - it's possible to be quite high up the national rankings while absolutely not being an elite athlete. Guys like Alex Yee (13:37 5k) have great form. Some guy who used to be a swimmer who puts in the hours on the bike and can can grind out a 16 minute 5k? Not so much, though he'd probably still do pretty well in the triathlon.

The hip flexors are chronically tight. The legs cannot extend to permit a full stride.

Bike and sitting are the culprits.

If the OP is taking about the run leg after the bike and swim legs, then yes, this is absolutely the reason. It's difficult to run normally when your quads and glutes are trashed and your hip flexors are completely rested. You have plenty of strength to propel your leg forward then nothing for the rest of the gait.

For the average triathlete (not ITU elite types, who have good form) it comes down, in part, to misinformation (in addition to tight hips, etc). The pose method comment above may have been made in jest but it's true to some extent. A lot of triathletes don't have a competitive running background, so they don't know what fast running looks like or how to achieve it. Then they get sucked into the triathlon and "coaching" industry, and all end up with a similar shuffle.

Same with swimming - unless they have a competitive background, they get sucked into the culture and hear things like high stroke rate, etc. and end up spinning their wheels and looking the same.

The best thing a triathlete can do, particularly amateurs with semi-competitive aspirations, is break out of the triathlon culture and go hang out with runners, swimmers, and cyclists.

^That's it, swimming helps mitigate the problem , but it's tight hip flexors from the bike. Also, if they were great runners a lot of people would never have started triathlons.

By the way, it's also very easy to identify the triathletes in the pool by their form (and also gear). In no way is this a criticism. Triathlon is a hard core sport. And for the record i'm not implying any kind of great swim form myself.

as purely a runner, when i read this i read it as "in the water they have decent form" vs mine that is....

later comments from those with a swimming background read it as "they have bad swimming form like they do bad running form".

interesting all around....
