On a high school XC course is the white line which may appear between various left/red and right/yellow flag turns simply a guide or do the runners need to run a certain close distance to the line? I'm thinking in terms of best tangents, etc.
Today it's pretty common to just run CC races on a track.
I remember having quite a few "xc" races in h.s. that were almost entirely in parking lots.

Our HS course required scrambling up a hill steep enough to require grabbing trees and bushes. Definitely not bikeable.
If you use paint, don't use orange. I once won a race because the runner in first went straight instead of turning. Apparently he was color blind and couldn't see the orange paint on the grass.
