How many world records do Jumbo's athletes have to their credit?
Villanova set an indoor world record of 16:19.0 for the 4 x mile relay in 1976.
Dick Buerkle had the indoor WR in the mile at 3:54.93 and was the 1976 U.S. Olympic Trials winner at 5,000m.
Don Paige set three indoor WRs for 1,000 yards (best of 2:04.7) and in the boycott year of 1980 was ranked number one in the world at 800m ahead of Seb Coe and Olympic winner Steve Ovett. Paige also pulled off an unprecedented double by winning the 800m and 1,500m at the NCAA championships in 1979, the 800m win coming 35 minutes after his 3:39.20 victory in the 1,500m final.
Eamonn Coghlan ran the indoor WR of 3:49.78 in the mile and had a long list of international accomplishments, including winning the 5,000m at the inaugural World Championships in 1983. The WR and the WC gold came after Elliot's death in 1981, but Coghlan assuredly would credit Elliot's developmental influence with his rise to the top of the running world.
Not WR holders, but ...
Ron Delaney was the 1956 Olympic champion at 1,500m.
Sydney Maree was/is a multiple AR holder (1,500m time of 3:29.77 still stands) and multiple NCAA champion and record holder.
This list of luminaries doesn't even include Marty Liquori, Mark Belger and many other world- and national-class runners.
Lest we forget, Jumbo Elliot also had WR-setting athletes and Olympic gold medal winners in events other than middle distances.
