I guess it gives me hope that I'll improve this time around since I'm on week 14 of averaging 105. As time has gone on I haven't really increased my peak mileage, just kind of got rid of the down weeks one by one.

747 about 12 years ago, when I was setting most of my Post-collegiate bests, is the highest I have recorded. I am bad at writing in a log. In 2001, the summer before my first marathon I was running 75-80 miles a week for most of the summer and may have been slightly higher or about the same. I have only cracked 80 dozen times or so in the last 30 years and have only hit 100 once (Just to see if I could), so I've never been that close to 800. My 10 week average this summer at age 43 is exactly half at 440.
About 90 mls per week , year around! My best half marathon 1.01.40 so far.

beside of this i like willis, but i feel that his lydiard fixation is not the best choice. we will see if 1000 miles in 10 weeks will make the difference. all the best to willis.

My 3 highest 10-week stretches - 1316, 1312, 1301. Although I am on pace for about 1420-1440 as long as I don't injure myself in the next 10 days.
Mileage is not a race winner alone - as others have said pace, elevation, training history, etc all play their part.
But some of us just like logging big miles, regardless of result. We just enjoy it. I am old, slow and run ultras and I am well aware that many people run much, much faster than me on a fraction of the mileage. But I like training, I like big miles and I haven't been injured for years, so I'm sticking with it. For me it also plays a big role in mental health too.
I got a 10 week total of 1493M last year - hopefully in the process of something similar currently. I also got 32 consecutive 100+M weeks last year.
My best 10 week total I have recorded on Strava is 1749M from 2014 - included a peak week of 266M. May have done more earlier that year, but don't have records for it.
I don't see Willis has a 5000 guy. I do think he has a solid year left 1500 in 2018.

Two winters ago when I was 51, I set a goal of 1,000 miles in the first 3 months of the year. All on a treadmill. I was still on pace at 11 weeks before a cold floored me. I was just under 800 for 10 weeks. Each week included a vertical kilometer run and a speedwork day. I could tell I was getting a little more worn down every week and wouldn't do that much mileage if I was training for a race.
about 690-700, 15 years ago, strangely 49m per week is pretty consistent these days. Funnily enough yesterday I did 13 km hard and 16.8km in total (10.5m) and I'm absolutely stuffed, never slept last night, then I had to take a kid to soccer. I'm too old, its a young man's game.
My highest 10 weeks is probably 1000-1050 miles (was doing consistent 90-115 mile weeks), back when I was living in Budapest. I didn't do much else then besides run and study math haha..except I guess I watched a lot of snooker and UEFA on Eurosport.

Looking at the most likely time period in my paper logs, I found a 10 week stretch of 1,204.5 miles from January 8, 1990 to March 18, 1990. The runs were in singles, ranging from 16 to 23 miles - mostly 20. There were 6 days with no runs, when I was tired.
I was 20 years old, a college junior, and running on my own. I actually had my best academic quarter as an undergrad during that time - straight As as an engineering major at UCLA.

1300+ 10 week stretch the summer after my high school year, i was 17-18. Probably regret that now.

And yet still so much of high mileage vs low mileage mentality here in letsrun. Many thinks that high mileage = low quality. Yes, at first your legs are empty and out of energy to do workouts but once you´ve familiar with the new mileage start doing the workouts. Would you mind to tell your 10k and marathon times? My highest mpw has been only 128 and never tolerated high mileage several weeks without a down week, once averaged a month at 100mpw with workouts, it included a down week of 65miles. Other weeks were at 105-115mpw.
High mileage isn´t for everyone, and increasing the mileage should be done very progressively. Only increase just enough to reach a new stimulus, if you get too eager you won´t benefit from the hard work and you´ll be forced to back off at some point.
My 10 week highest average has been 877,5 miles - while working full time.

Doing a quick look back at my logs, the period I think was probably the highest I hit 1,199 for a 10 week period leading up to my marathon PR. That year I averaged over 100 miles a week despite missing a couple weeks to injury.
