Why would anyone do some running each week if they didn't really have any passion for it? That doesn't make sense when they could find another form of exercise that they might enjoy more.

i classify a hobbyjogger by how many threads they make on letsrun about hobbyjoggers.

It's not a hobby.
It's a prescription - take 5k everyday or suffer kidney failure.
What would you call this kind of runner:
-Primary reason for running is to stay in shape, look good and be healthy
-Wants maximal benefits from relatively small amount of training
-Planning to run till death
-Testosterone replacement therapy when older
-Experiments with PEDs for fun(in a healthy and safe way)
-Listen to music while running
-Most miles on a treadmill
-Goes to races only for the competitive aspect
-Wants a fast time
-Concentrates very much on nutrition

I would LOVE to be a hobbyjogger again. Once you're injured, ANY running would be nice and missed. Going on 2 months now.
I stopped entering races a few years ago b/c I didn't want to do the high intensity training to run good times.....and I usually got injured during a 12 or 16wk training session.
So became a "hobbyjogger" I guess. I still love to run. Rarely a watch or music.. 30-40 mi a week. Some tempo and medium hard runs sprinkled in.
With a re-occurring left butt/pirformis issue where NOTHING tried seems to help, I'm down to brisk walking 60 min a day. If I throw in 100yard jogs here and there during my walk, even that upsets my pirformis and I'm in pain later.
I keep doing light stretching and strength work but so far nothing has helped. I'm grateful I can do my brisk walk every night but would give anything to be "hobbyjogging" again.

Do you run professionally? Does your sponsor contract/appearance fees/prize money pay your mortgage? Is running your primary occupation rather than your avocation?

I've posted about this before but a hobbyjogger is someone who fits 1 of 2 criteria below.
1. They aren't training to get faster in running.
2. They cannot run a mile/1500 faster than what would be considered the fastest easy pace for an elite runner (use USA's qualifying standards to determine if elite or not).
Daniels says that a 13:28 5k runner should do easy runs at 5:42 pace at the fastest and 6:03 at the slowest, so if you can't run a mile in under 6:03 almost all of your training will be done slower than all of their training, making them two completely different activities.
So you can just be really untalented (say 5:50 best for the mile) but love running and have goals and train seriously, and you aren't a hobby jogger. But if you are crazy talented and can run like 4:40 for a mile with no training, but you don't train seriously, then you are a hobbyjogger. Keep in mind that you should age grade the results, so if you are 90 but can run 6:30 for a mile that's not a hobby jogger time.
Anyone slower than elite status as defined above, but still making some sort of money from running (they are compensated by some sort of sponsor for running, a contract or just get free shoes. Not race winnings) would be considered sub-elite. These are your local guys that ran In college and are still running 14:30 for 5k and 70 minute halfs.
Anyone not a hobby jogger, not an elite, or not sub elite is simply runner.
I have yet to hear a compelling argument against this or any better definitions.

I think this is the best reply yet. Therefore, I do not believe that 80% of LetsRun posters are hobbyjoggers.
