I know that there is no reason to, except that it is more comfortable to race like that, but why do cyclist do it to help? Swimmers do for obvious reasons.
Cyclists do it because 1) wound care for road rash from crashes is easier/less messy with shaved legs, 2) less resistance/'ouch factor' when getting their daily deep tissue massage (hugely important for recovery; pros will have a soigneur to do this for them ), 3) slightly more aero perhaps, 4) tradition; some of it is simply that's how it's always been done. And frankly, hairy legs look like crap in bike shorts.
I don't shave my legs, I just trim them. I think it's a better look with some hair, but not totally shaved. I saw one male runner at some 10K race (which he won) with so much leg (and arm) hair to the point of frankly disgusting. He's really skinny too, which made it look even worse. I think there is such level that a person should think of at least trimming it a bit.
Been shaving my legs and arms and pubic area since I started running. Nothing like feel of running naked in the streets. Try it once and see. Start off with a good beard trimmer and then go to the razor.
a lot of competitive HS'ers and up shave their legs in the racing season. I am thinking about doing that but everybody says it would be gay if I did. I am a fit runner that will be a sophomore, so it's not like I'm overweight and shaving my legs with short shorts. Opinions?
“Everybody says it would be gay if you did”? Everybody is an awful lot of people. But it sounds like you’re surrounding yourself with the wrong kinds of people. Do what you want and don’t feel pressured to do or not do what people tell you. Be your own person. Shaving your legs definitely doesn’t make you gay but your gender preference is nobody’s business anyway and certainly doesn’t make you any lesser of a person whichever sex you are attracted to.

Do it but don't forget to paint your fingernails.
And maybe change your hair color. Monthly at least, if not weekly.
