you're not ready to break 60. I think breaking 63, your dad's expectation might be possible. When I broke 60 for the first time, I was in the 1730s for xc 5k.

Well I think I'm definitely faster than 17:30, but I see that it would probably be a long shot for me.
Ok last year the 10 miler was won in slightly below 53 minutes and 10th place was 56:30. If I do some longer tempos this winter can I nab a top 10 finish overall?

36:00 for 10K is 5:47 pace (just under 58 if you held that pace for 10 miles, which you can't). Most people who could run that for 10K would be really, really close to 60 minutes. Youngsters like the OP would probably lack the endurance to go under.
would be very surprised if you can't run 60 right now. would actually be surprised by anything slower than 58.
35 years ago... within a 4 month span I ran 4:59 (mile), 17:37 (5K), 36:25 (10K), 59:28 (10 Mi), 1:19:50 (half marathon) All pr's.
I was running 60-65 mpw. So if you have the endurance (enough weekly mileage) a sub 60 is a lock for you. You definitely have more talent than me.
For one of your workouts go do a 6 mile tempo at 6 minute pace on a flat course. If you can finish that workout feeling pretty fresh still you can probably run sub 60. If you are at any point laboring in the slightest you have no chance of holding that same pace for another 4 miles.

I just threw out the 36 min for 10k as a baseline for fitness. I'm not a fast runner, but if you said I have a goal time for a certain distance, you want to know what your speed is at distances around that mark. I would say that if you can't drop a sub 36 min 10k then there's no way you'll hit a sub 60 10 miler.

I totally agree agree with that statement. Some people who can run under 36 for 10K will fail to run sub-60 for 10 miles, but anyone who can't hit that for 10K has no hope of breaking an hour.
Depends, few years back only doing mileage ran just over 57 for the Army 10-miler. At that time, there was no way I would have been able to run a 4:45 mile. That said, if you're not consistently doing 8 - 12 mile runs, it's going to be difficult to hold a sustained effort for an hour.

In terms of consistency of my runs here's my weekly schedule
M- 8.5
T- am 3 pm 5.5 (fartlek)
W-7
T-8 (w/ tempo or hills)
F-8
S-DNR
S-10
I think all the slow twitch old guys on here are wrong. I think you can do it for sure under the circumstances you listed. It might be close but I think you'll be 60 minutes give or take a minute. Not 63 minutes. It will be easier with a slightly longer long run and some long 'easy' tempos. But I think you could probably do it right now, let alone in spring
I ran a 10 mile race at 17 years old and had no idea if I could break an hour. I had run 15:55 for XC 5k and then taken a couple week break before only running a couple 40 mile weeks of all easy mileage. I wanted to be conservative so I went out in 6:15. I hit halfway in 29:55, and by then had realized I was going to do it. I ran the second 5 miles in 28:55 for a total time of 58:50. If I hadn't have been so conservative I like to think I could've run much faster.
Bottom line. 10 miles at 5:59 is easier than you think when you have competition.
