Wearing Split Shorts in public - how to handle Hecklers? MEN ONLY

Gain some muscle. When I picked up running again after putting on 30 lbs the the heckling pretty much stopped completely. Was a pleasant surprise.

For guys, wearing split shorts while riding the subway (and in pretty much all non-running situations) is definitely weird. You're a half step away from this guy:

I don't think you should care too much about what random subway people think of you, but you should accept that it's weird.

Also, sitting down in split shorts is not a good look in any context, even if you're not sweaty.

Lol who wears underwear under split shorts though? That's something a 15 year old high schooler who's self conscious about their legs does. And why don't you just run back to your house/apartment/car, put some shorts on, and then walk around? Also there's no point in wearing a long sleeve compression shirt, that probably does help the heckling...very extra. Just go shirtless.

Eh I always tend to just ignore hecklers. Plus I know for a fact that I have nicer and more defined/veiny legs than pretty much anyone I'll run by. Splits shorts are the way to go. Haters are probably jealous cause they know they're lazier and way less fit. Plus we'll live longer cause we run 👍

I am a runner so I wear running shorts, what other people think or say is not my concern. Yes I have a body, just like everyone else does, it is a zero-sum game criticising them.

It's because when I run I run from a suburb that's about 7 miles away from downtown Boston. I also bought a monthly transportation pass to commute so I might as well use it.

It would be so pitiful if I avoided people on my runs because what, I'm afraid of Jen harassing for and criticizing me? It is getting to that point and it's making me sad.

Usually when I pass people on the sidewalk I always prepare a slight nod and happy mood, you know, greeting them and acknowledging them.

But it's getting to the point that every interaction I have with a person is negative and I expect someone to say something to put me down. It's making me cold and not friendly anymore.

When I first started running in cargo shorts and heavy cotton t shirts everything was fine. Now it's like I'm a hated/persecuted group!

The longsleeve compression shirt also offers UV protection spf 50 and I think heat training is good for me.

I don't want to get to the point where I have a permanent mean face whenever I run out in public. It's killing me!

Phoenix Jones is a bona fide superhero. There's nothing wrong with a superhero wearing a superhero costume, just like there's no problem with a bona fide fast runner wearing split shorts. And if you are Super Crosscountryman, you can wear both!

I just finished my 11 mile run in 86 degree weather and as I was walking the crosswalk a guy walking towards me called me the N word

What the hell? I'm Asian and I'm very tan because I run, but why would someone say that?

Maybe I should have said:

He was a super fat old man in his 50s with an oversized gray t shirt and commonplace jeans.

What should I have done in that situation? Help me!

It isn't the length of your shorts; it is the look of your legs. If your legs were attractive, it wouldn't be a problem, regardless of your inseam length.

TL; DR

My legs are attractive and shaved with some scars from running through forests, falling through potholes and razor blade nicks.

Maybe the problem is the length of... me.

I'm 5'3" with a 28" inseam jeans.

Or maybe the problem is that when they check out my legs and then notice that it's a guy (me) they get so angry for fooling themselves.

I've had older women say to their coworkers (as I was walking past them) "Those are some damn nice legs."

I've also had men in their late twenties and early thirties say "Nice legs." They were trying to make eye contact with me though.

Anyways all of the positive feedback I get are NOT from Caucasians men.

On the other hand, I get lots of glances down there (at my legs) from women of all backgrounds and I am damn proud of that.

Am I getting heckled primarily from white guys because I'm Asian? My parents immigrated here from an impoverished background, which is why I'm 5'3".

It's getting to the point where if some guy is trying to stare me down or start a heckle, I will challenge them by looking in their eyes (not in an endearing manner). What the hell. If they are trying to start something with me, I might as well not pull an Asian and be timid, not anymore. There's a lot of generalizations and stereotypes.

I'd just like to know from your perspectives, upon reading this, if it's alright that I act mean and give people the stare if I feel a heckle is coming. Or am I blowing this out of proportion?

At this point I'm realizing I'm always going to get heckled.

I'm just hoping that someone tries to actually injure or assault me so that I can end them or you know, humiliate them. I learned martial arts for 8 years and became a black belt and was taught about discipline and respect. Well, I'm not holding back for these fools, especially for fatties and people in their mid twenties who try to harass me because they like targeting people.

The fat and nonathletic people are cowards and can only attack when they're in groups. It's just words they use against me and I'm sad to say that I'll have to endure that forever. I would be really impressed and actually relieved if someone tries a physical stunt with me because I can quickly put an end to that.

Am I losing my humanity and kindness? Probably, but this is also LetsRun where people always will bash one another.

Let's not forget this is a first world problem too. It's pretty ironic that my manners are being changed because I'm letting the heckling get to me.

Also, you guys' advice suck. All I've gotten was:

"Yeah, it's pretty weird to be in split shorts on the subway" and "You're not cut out for this sport if you can't handle it."

All I can say is, I will enjoy pissing people off and I will taunt them because I am free. Sweat in your cargo shorts and jeans, you fools!

I would probably think it was pretty weird of I say a guy in a football helmet and shoulder pads if he was just walking around. If he was on the football field, though, it would probably seem normal.

Food for thought.

I run 7 to 12 miles first.

The first 7 miles just to get to Boston, the other 5 miles I choose to run to MIT or Harvard Square or Boston University (Green Line).

After I finish I run I become a civilian again. That means I roam Boston in the split shorts that I used to get here in the first place.

Wouldn't I be a loser if I had to bring safety shorts or another pair of shorts just to not get criticized?

When women are allowed to wear shorts or even booty shorts as civilian attire that are even shorter than my split shorts, and no one finds that alarming, then I think it's only fair for me to go roam Boston in split shorts.

Am I asking for it? Yeah.

I find it really sad that the thoughts and words of other people actually control how we behave. Just like how I always see runners ONLY wear 5" split shorts in black or dark blue. I know they have shorter split shorts, but they don't do it because they're scared. Scared of what? Scared of words and I'm getting tired of being intimidated by words.

Is this crushing my soul thinking about human nature? Yeah.

But I won't stop wearing split shorts. That is my conclusion.
