Vicious surges? You ended up over 7:00 minutes behind! At what point on the first lap did he surge....that is the only time you could have been near the leader. Or did you sit down on the infield for a while??

I ran 20:03 5k in my first race ever only to learn that it was 500m too long.Anyways, I was beaten by 3 and 1/2 minutes by the top 5 guys from my club.
But the worst embarassment I got was on the track- 10000m, I was in great shape, hoping to run 30min flat, possibly cracking 30, and finished dead last in 37:12. An excuse? No excuse, I just fell victim to vicious surges of the victor (29:57), to which I was (mentally) unprepared. It took me 3 months to mentally recover from that and to run a single step.
Oh, and I ran 1:22:30 half (my Pr is 1:05), no sound explanation, just ran out of energy from hard training probably.
