Korir 43.34 4x400 anchor in West regionals

i have

in 2 open 400s where he was quantum leap better than anyone else in the field

no pressure to make any kind of a start

is this a joke ???

2 no-pressure runs, he coud amble out as slow as he wanted with no threat in the field

who said it had anything to do with it ?

he was nearly 3s down on anchor & forced to blast the relay leg from stick-take, not amble the start as he has done so in past 2 open 400s

because he runs 400/200 you automatically call him a "sprinter" but Korir because he runs 400/800 is not a sprinter ???

Korir did reps of 22 flat earlier in the year according to his coach & that's when coach asked him to run some 400s

you think running reps of 22 & you aren't a sprinter ???

Alot of top 100m men do c.8.8s for the last leg of a relay

that is for 4 x 100 NOT 4 x 400

There is a range 0.5-1.2s 400m because it depends on how fresh the athlete is

we are expecting both relay & open run to be in same shape

But I will give you credit for a change, two weeks ago he only looked 45s flat but it appears he definitely can go 44-low

try 44-flat at worst

the difference is because of relative different handover speeds :

in the 4 x 100, the changeover is happening at ~ 11.5m/s whereas in the 4 x 400 it is happening at ~ 9.0m/s

it cannot be the same difference for both types of races & it isn't

the fastest auto-timed relay legs in history are :

mj - 42.94

warriner - 43.10

butch - 43.23

korir - 43.34

there have been coupla faster HT ones than korir, but that's the upto date list

now, certainly mj & warriner ran unimpeded, route-1 anchors already proverbial mile ahead without even having to check the vids

both ran anchors tight in lane-1 all the way around

Korir likely had no such luxury !!!

flo-track premium have vid & it won't be youtubed for months, if ever

so, we have to go to full race splits

Korir was 5th at stick-change & charged to 2nd by end

at take-over, he was 0.21s behind 4th, 0.63s behind 3rd, 1.91s behind 2nd & 2.67s !!! behind 1st

he caught all but the 2nd who won the race with a 44.68 anchor

now, analysing without vid, it is impossible to believe all those guys ahead of him just drifted wide in lane & let Korir run unimpeded, route-1 race tight in lane 1 !

it's virtually certain he had to run wide on 1st bend to overtake the 4th & 3rd guy & probably ran 1.5 - 2m extra on bend

he probably didn't overtake the fading leader until last bend as 2.67s down to start with, probably needing another 0.75 - 1m run extra on bends

therefore, it's very likely his anchor was with an additional ~ 2.25 - 3.0m compared to an anchor above like mj's or warriner

doing the math, that is 43.34 relay for 402.25 to 403m -> for 400 only of

43.01 - 43.09 !!!

adding 0.7s to this for open 400 & the estimate for his current open 400 shape is

43.71 - 43.79 !!!

this is solidified by fact he was unrested & had to run a 1'45+ the day before

suffice to say, i woud 100% say Korir is currently in at very, very worst 44-flat shape & much more likely at 43.7+

Serious question: Do you know that he cruised the first 200m in those races or are you assuming he did?

He didn't cruise but he clearly ran a measured race.

A race where you're behind a few seconds trying to chase someone is more indicative of his potential than a race where he starts from scratch and wins by a second.

Fred Kerley has split 43.35 and run 43.70

Korir has split 43.34 so he could run 43.69

Kerley runs a 43.35 split because he doesn't have to run any faster in order for A&M to win. That's why they bury him on the second leg. Korir IS the UTEP 4x4's only chance to advance, he is running anchor at his absolute limit with the baton. His PR is a second slower than Kerley out of the blocks.

He can't touch El Caballo's combo over 400m and 800m... Not yet! Juantorena was on a whole other level when on that hot cuban sauce back in the 1970's!!!

More importantly, it shows that Korir overtook the first two runners ahead of him on the backstretch about 150m into the race, the third runner ahead he passed on the homestretch. Therefore, this is video makes Calculos assumptions of Korir running 2.5 -3 m more invalid. In conclusion Korir is likely in 44 low shape.

That's right. Korir passes on the backstretch and the beginning of the homestretch, and otherwise is in lane one. 44.2-44.3 shape.

Have you guys' calculations factored in the aerodynamic draft that Korir gains in a relay that he won't get in an open 400m in lanes? Air resistance matters more when you're moving fast and lots of guys run fast come-from-behind relay legs.
