Russia made it more difficult for the US, Israel and the Gulf Heathens to depose Assad via "moderate rebels," aka ISIS. Russia tossed a fat wrench in their plans for a competing pipeline by stomping these fvckers out hard while keeping Assad in place. Assad. The elected President and non-puppet leader of Syria.
