As I recall, yes, he was trying to run fast from the start and paid for it dearly on such a warm day. If he'd had tougher competition he might not have felt like that was such a good idea.
I posted yesterday on Boston the documentary that premiered Sat night. I understand that it will be shown around the country on Wed this week. In it, the 1985 boycott by top runners is covered along with the entrenched in all matters of the BAA's Will Cloney.
Rojo, although your team was probably out straight this weekend, perhaps one of you could provide a review of the film for these pages. It can provide a great guide to gain insight to the race's rich history. Tom D's book is the best but of more interest to some of us only. The movie will add depth.

Looked like a "war of attrition" to me. I can understand what happened in '76 when the winning time was 2:20 under INFERNAL conditions. Not all that of a strong field either due to the lack of big $$$ ? Who knows!

69 degrees at noon, with the Sun directly overhead, isn't the same as 69 degrees in the shade or 69 degrees in the early morning or evening.
The main reason is easy to figure out. Except for the top two, none of the rest were elite marathoners. And Tuttle was well past his competitive years.
