All good suggestions so far.
Your chances of being boxes in are significantly reduced if you run on the line between lanes 1 and 2 (this was already suggested). If the pack is large you still might have someone on your right but it will only be one person which is easy to escape.
Outdoor 1500m
1) get out fast
2) get onto shoulder of leader (so half of your body length is behind them half is outside of them, this prevents people from trying to pass)
3) sit there and be cognizant of your spacing
4) wait till your sweet spot (600-200 left) and blast it to the finish
Crowded Indoor mile or 1200 on DMR
1) funnel to the last 3/4ths of the pack but be on the rail with spacing
2) watch for gaps to form, move up every straight section
3) eventually in about 600meters tuck into the should of 2nd place
4) blast from wherever you are comfortable from (600m-200m)
Get out of it like pro. You can even wear flowers in your hair and pretend you are a Berkeley grad.

I don't wear spikes because i'm not comfortable with them. I've tried wearing them before but i didn't like them.
I am coming back from an injury that i've been struggling with last year.
So, what i am understanding is stay with the leader with my body half behind her, in-between lanes 1 and 2. If someone tries to pass, speed it up
