D3 Coach Salaries

You seem to be taking the post very personally, as if you believe the posters description on his or her coach is about you or somebody you know. If that is the case then you being able to identify the coach through the description validates the description made by the poster in some capacity.

The poster has no obligation to tell you the school or coach, in fact he or she did the right thing by not putting their name out there. If you are so passionate about getting to the bottom of this you can do the investigating yourself.

Uhh I can't identify the coach because I don't know who it is and don't believe the OP. It probably describes zero people. I'm sure there are plenty of bad coaches. None of them gets paid that well.

I've never been so enraged over anything in my entire message board posting career.

And yet I'm also 100% correct.

I don't think it's hard to believe that a coach makes a lot of money in DIII even with poor results. It's all about negotiating and being friends with the administration. If there is no friction and everybody makes their money then there is no incentive to fire a coach, especially if the school only has the program for title IX reasons. Some schools that simply do not care how bad the track and cross country teams are, especially if there has never been a winning tradition.

You'll see good coaches fired because they don't get along with the AD. You'll see terrible coaches last for years because they are friends with the AD. It's just like any other work environment. Sometimes it's all about who you know. In DIII the spotlight rarely shines on XC/Track and its not hard for bad coaches to fly under the radar for years collecting checks.

Why would a school that doesn't care about athletics pay a premium for coaches regardless of results?

It is, because it's not how demand curves work.

I know two coaches of the same age (near retirement) at two very different institutions that make 75-80k. That's really about as high as it goes.

I don't know anyone who has a bonus structure in D3.

I know most coaches are happy if they're 40 and making 50-60k.

I know many that are 30 and making 35k.

I know many that make 50k and work at schools with nearly billion dollar endowments.

That's the universe they actually operate in. Your coach making 120k, is lying to you, or including their spouse's salary.

D3 head coaching salary: somewhere between $30,000 and 130,000

Tons of free gear every year (warm up suits, tech shirts, etc.): Priceless

low-end, some no-name scrub coaching at some no-name school in some flyover state, he's probably looking at $40k to start. on the upper end, a dude who has been around forever (north central) or a guy whose teams are consistently very good at urban, academic powerhouses (mit, washu, cmu) are probably north of six figures.

I agree. I doubt very many of those coaches are making 6 figures, especially north central. My college head coach only made $85,000 year after 35 years at a Big Ten school on a team with multiple team Big Ten titles, a national champion, and several All-Americans. I know his pay was on the low end for DI, but I still doubt very many DIII coaches makes much more than that if even near equal to that. I also know that the replacement head XC coachthat took over after my coach retired at my alma mater started at around $45k/yr (at least that is what he told us at a practice one day as he explained his plan for his retirement.)

I'm not sure. I hear this from my former athletes and others at both schools. It amazes me the coaches there don't have any pride at all in their work.

I still coach one of the athletes on their off days during the XC season. They only meet as a team on Tuesdays and Thursdays and do the same fartlek and hill workout each time. No splits, target times, nothing.

I'm a head cross coach at a DII program and assistant track coach at a program that makes the podium almost every year at the NCAA track national championships. 18k no benefits.

Don't be surprised if you are trying to enter the coaching world to find there is no money.

My D3 Coach volunteers, but he is also in charge of the athletic facility. This is where our basketball gym is, yoga, indoor track, pool and weights are.

While I won't say it's impossible, this story just doesn't really add up . . . unless she's also an asst AD or something along those lines. That pay, her supposed ineptitude, and being at a DIII that doesn't even value track apparently—it sounds like if all that's true, she's really an administrator stuck with being director of track operations as well.

I will be getting an assistant D3 job right out of college. I will be making 4-6k to coach and I'm getting a PT job in admissions. So, maybe 20k between the both? Granted, it's leading into the head coach position in a few years, and the head coach makes 36k plus fantastic benefits.

it would be very easy for the letsrun sleuths to through conference-by-conference, and figure out if this person exists. i'm calling b.s.
