Sprinting all out for as long as you can

Here;s another interesting question: Is it possible that one could literally commit suicide doing this? Or die unintentionally? Or would the body always give out unable to move as a defense mechanism against just that happening?

No unless you go on for days or something I'm pretty sure you couldn't die from this. Unless you have a heart condition or something. I mean what would kill you? too much lactic acid? No I really don't think so.

As for the original question. Interesting... I might actually try 15 min of this some day. Not today tough, I can't be asked...

I think the result could be more interesting than you expect. If I understood your theories correctly. Many here seem to think you will start to slow down quickly after 40 seconds or so to a really slow pace, and pretty quickly they would be lying on the ground or walking. While others seem to think that you would slow down in a more gradual way, going to 6-7 minute pace after a while, and then i guess you think you would just get slower.

Lets say the person doing this is a very fit 10k runner, who if he wanted could probably run 100 miles in 15 hours as well(or however long a good 10k runner could run). Lets also say this person has unlimited mental strength.

I think he would start too slow down very quickly after 40 seconds as lactic acid levels get too high, he might even need to walk. But then his body would start to remove lactic acid, eventually, I don't know how long it would take, but eventually I think he would start approaching, for example hm pace, and peak at that pace, stay there for a while, and then gradually slow down again, this time slowing down much slower, but now slowing down all the way untill he can't walk anymore. Ofcourse when he finaly collapses his body would be completely trashed...

Well she wasn't talking about lactic acid from training. She was talking about what if you would inject lactic acid in an external way. And I think she's just talking out of her ass anyway.

I read somewhere that the human body can only hold max effort for about 17 seconds before you falter. This guy said it was true for elites and also true for regular joes. The elites are just going faster.

It's important to define max effort. Max effort is all out 100% - whatever your effort is if you were running 40 yards all out. It's not 95% effort, but a full-gas 100% throw down.

I think this applies in swimming, too.

The better you are the faster you will go, but you won't go longer than about 17 seconds. I thought that concept was interesting.

I don't know if it's true and I can't remember the coach, but I do remember that he was a recognizable figure, maybe Michael Phelp's coach. It could be BS, but I can buy it.

Easy to test yourself i guess.

I think your body would shut down before you get to that point.

but to answer your question, it's less about distance and more about time. in peak condition, you're probably looking at around 40 seconds. for some fat dude who is out of shape, he's looking at 10.

That's close to some of the workouts we ran in college for the 400 - whether you were a 45 sec runner or a 49 runner that seemed to hold true. I was running the 800 also, a fair bit under 1:50 but the same "rule" applied in the 400.

There is a video of a dude sprinting 100% up a flight of stairs that is like 3/4th of a mile somewhere out west, hes definitely going all out.

I had a coach who one day told me "I have a new workout for you and it will be the hardest workout you'll ever have". I said "No problem, bring it on". He then told me if I can do it under 20 minutes I will be ready for any race at any time.

THE WORKOUT:

On a flat bike trail- 10 minutes out as fast as I can and then come back FASTER.

Think about it! The true test of mental toughness.

You would dig yourself in a hole and assuming you were still going 100% effort, theres no way your body is going to be clearing this lactic acid out as fast as you are creating it. I think the longest someone could manage this would be a few minutes, but it may be even less than that.

Your terminology is wrong as someone already pointed out. "Sprinting" means running as fast as possible. Track 100m sprinters can only do this for about 60 meters before they start decelerating. Even 100m sprinters have to pace themselves for the distance. What you mean is running at 100% effort with no pacing -- this is not sprinting.

Was anyone inspired by this thread to try it? It would be fascinating to watch a group do this, the different speed/time curves playing out next to each other. Not quite as fascinating to actually do though.

I'm an ex middle distance runner, now physician. I was a high school national record holder at 800M and also ran 400M and sometimes 1500M. The rule of thumb is one can sprint full out for about 300M. So a full sprint is anaerobic for about 30 to 35 seconds before lactic acid starts to kick in. BTW, my nickname is one of my heroes:

Go to your next road race and watch virtually every kid under the age of 12 go 100% ahead of everyone to finish later at 12 minute pace.
