HCZ is a p!ss weak diuretic, with about as much diuretic effect as a coupla espressos

Agreed. Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) is a very weak diuretic. Furosemide or other loop diuretics are masking agents of choice. Mostly HCTZ is used to treat hypertension. African Americans are much more prone to hypertension at a young age, even younger athletes. The story is actually believable.

Are you a doctor or pretending to be one? I never said HCTZ is good agent for a true hypertensive crisis...that would require admission and IV clevidipine, nicardipine, nitroprissude (rarely used anymore) or esmolol.
In all likelihood she had a hypertensive 'urgency', not emergency, that didn't require admission.
She was taking HCTZ in the outpatient setting, which is a reasonable 1st or 2nd line agent for hypertension...so are amlodipine and a ACE-I or ARB. Again, I think her story is reasonable although you never know.

HCTZ is one of the most common prescribed blood pressure medications (in the USA at least) because it is off patent and dirt cheap and side effects are well known after being around so long.
It's one of the few on Walmart's $4/month prescription list for people without insurance. I had to use it for a year or two when at first they wouldn't do my dental work at the dental school because my BP tested too high.
It does make you pee a lot, so maybe that is why it is abused. I couldn't take the full pill, would make me get up like three times a night, so took half instead.
Once I started running again full time after the dental work my BP dropped enough to stop taking it entirely. Had no idea it was banned but I'm not even remotely good enough to worry about such things.
It is most definitely not performance enhancing, if anything, ALL bp medication has detrimental effects on endurance athletes, and there are plenty of very good runners who have to take bp medication, it is a genetic condition.

I think all those witch hunters need to calm the F down. With all the blatant dopers around, DHN is far from one. She got popped for taking a prescription med for a medical reason. She no doubt gave USADA a ton of medical documentation for back up. If those guys accepted it and gave her 3 months, so be it. I certainly don't look at her as someone with a tarnished reputation.

I'm sure she was seen in the ED for hypertensive urgency and was given clonidine or hydralazine until her blood pressure stabilized, then was prescribed HCTZ to take outpatient until a follow-appointment. HCTZ is first line for HTN, and ED docs tend to make safe choices when they prescribe since they will not be following the patient, so that makes sense. But you'd have to be pretty dumb to just start popping prescription pills as an athlete without first doing your research. I totally understand taking whatever you have to take in an emergency situation, but to fill an outpatient prescription without even thinking about questioning it is just irresponsible.
