But why not just take the later flight for $100 extra bucks or whatever? I would have loved to get some beers and food first, hang out and celebrate a bit more. Skip a meal or per week and you've got the extra cash right there. Take an extra day off work or whatever. It's the freaking Boston Marathon. You've earned the right.
I've caught flights immediately after the marathon twice. It's quick and easy if you take the MBTA.
You don't need to go back to the hotel after the race.
Leave all of your stuff in your drop bag at the start.
Pick your stuff up from your drop bag bus at the finish.
Go to the changing tent and change clothes.
Use the MBTA to get to the airport. Scope out the train (I think it's Red Line) you'll need to take from the nearest station at the finish to get to South Station and then transfer to the Silver Line (SL1).

Biggest problem I had was when leaving later the trains are packed with Bosox fans after the baseball game. Fortunately people make space for marathon finishers.
Before the flight take an aspirin to thin your blood to avoid DVT issues.

I have run Boston two of the past three years with flights home immediately after the race. Both years I was running out of wave 1.
2014 my flight was at 5:05. Had plenty of time to walk back to my hotel (about 1mile), shower, change, take the subway/bus to Logan and have a beer at the airport lounge.
2016 my flight was 4:35 and had to wait for my sister (3:30 runner in wave 3). No time to go back to the hotel, we had to pack carry-on only and have my wife meet us with luggage at the family zone exit. But we still made it to the airport by 3:30...plenty of time to have a beer in the lounge.
Both years the subway/bus transit to the airport was free. IIRC some of the subway stops around Boylston & Copley were closed but it's not a far walk to another one. With minimal planning getting to the airport quickly is a breeze.

I agree. Tried the same thing a few years back. I was on the plane less than 3 hours after I finished. Groin cramped up while the plane was taking off. I had to just sit there and take it. It was miserable.

Thanks for this. I will have to look into the luggage bucket as well. I'm traveling alone so hopefully can move through things quickly.
I understand it'll be close but I have finals beginning the Wednesday so I want to be back ASAP.
In 2012 (the 89 degree year), I finished just before 1pm and waited for girlfriend for 2.5-3hrs. We took the train to our hotel, grabbed our bags and went directly to the airport for a 6:30pm flight. We were there with plenty of time and just cleaned up and changed clothes at the airport. If I was alone and needed to catch a 4:30 flight, it would have been no problem at all. Stay in a hotel that is in the right direction. Check your bags at the hotel reception so you can just grab them. Sure, it would be nice to shower and relax, but that isn't what you are asking. Note, if you do have enough time to shower, hotels will often accommodate.
We made a 5:30 flight in 2013, though we didn't have a ton of time by the time we got back to get our baggage and took the subway to the airport.

I'm a bit concerned that you have a range of 15 minutes for a goal of a marathon that's only 3 months away, but yeah, you can definitely make the flight if you run 3 flat or faster.

If you knew my training, I think you'd understand. Realistically it's going to be a lot closer to :45 than :30 but I haven't hit many key workouts so it's up in the air.

The point is the T is probably faster, moron.
No hotel yet, which is (obviously) a big factor. I can spend a little more if I need to but again... trying to keep this as budgeted as possible. This 4:30 flight is about $100 cheaper than anything else.
If you don't have a hotel yet, you might be in for a rude awakening. I booked mine back in October and was shocked by how expensive they were (Air BnB wasn't better). I got a room a few blocks from the finish line for $350 per night because it was one of the cheapest ones..........yeah THEN I remembered why I swore I'd never go back to Boston when I ran it last time......
