My fastest mile in a race (my only race) was 6:36. That was the 10th mile and a downhill section of single track on a trail 30K. Leader was minutes ahead and I never saw him, but I had been running with another guy for the first 9 miles, and I started to lose him at the top of a long 2000' climb. Sensing the chance to lose him I took off down the hill and tried to put as much distance as possible on him. I ended up beating him by 25 minutes, although he faded to 5th by the end. Second place finished 12 minutes back from me. That was my only race of the year. My fastest mile for the entire year was a downhill 4:48 on the road. Gravity works wonders on speed! Fastest flat mile was a 5:38 on an 8-mile progression run.
