If I am a college coach at a major program I would not recruit this kid. While he certainly has some talent, his performance at national meets warrant a large scholarship. I think his upside is very minimal and would not be worth the investment. Even accounting for 10k on the track and cross country I would rather allocate that scholarship to any kid finishing 20-30 today at FL.
Nothing against the kid, he seems like a nice guy and I hope he has a great career.

Which kid? The sophomore who killed it at NXN and Footlocker and didn't run amazing times at 15? Or the senior aerobic monster, who is a cross country demon? If you're not recruiting the sophomore, you're crazy. If you're not recruiting the guy with a great improvement curve who almost won FLN, you're also crazy. Mileage be damned. Ritz was doing 100 in high school.
The kid looks like he's 10. Why not?

Assuming we are talking Seth Hirsch, it depends on what you mean by upside. He is 4:21 miler/9:12 2 miler on the track and I have no clue what his training was like (both mileage/injury wise). What does that project out to? That is a 29:00-29:30 type runner with a couple years of development. That is a pretty solid 4th/5th man for most programs. Obviously you need to be an XC focused program as the odds of him being much of track runner go way down. It is easy to say the 4:12/9:12 guy is a better bet to develop more, but sometimes it doesn't happen.
And obviously if you get Seth, you hope their is one more big development spurt and he turns into a 28:30 guy. This spring will probably tell you a bit about his future when we learn if he becomes a sub 4:15 guy or if he stagnates around 4:20.

It's okay, someone else will recruit Seth Hirsch. He did not want to go to your college anyways.
He is fine. Elliot Krause from Wisco back in 2009-2013 could only run about 57-58 for 400 in high school. Also couldn't break 2, nor 4:20, but ran 9:08 to win state. Krause was also running 90-100mi/wk in high school. He turned out to be multiple time all-big 10, and multiple time all-American. Mick is probably looking to turn this kid into the same type of grass warrior Krause was.
I think this kid could be a tremendous addition to a distance oriented program (such as Wisconsin). He has some more physical maturing to do, and will likely only get stronger. He is efficient, and has good form. I would take him on a serious cross country team in a minute.
I am not persuaded one way or another by his track times. My guess is that he could run a 9 minute two mile right now under decent conditions. He is too fit not to do it. I lived in Omaha for a couple of years many years back, and remember the only warm or decent day during high school track season was the day of the state meet. Competition is light in Nebraska, so again, I think comparing his track performances to those, let's say, in suburban Dallas is a bit misleading.

Via twitter, he ran an 8:59 3200 time trial recently.
He is not a 59 guy. He went out in 2:19 in a 5k. There is just no way that a guy who can only run 59 is starting out with an average of 69.5 for an 800m for a 5k. Or if it is true, he should go out and run a half marathon or a marathon now, because he'll run some incredible times with that speed decay.

4:45/mile 5k (71/400).
12 seconds down per lap. But move it to the track from xc and that's probably 4:35/mile (68/69/400). 10 seconds slower/400m--better than Bekele at his best.
I ran the 400 the other day and I ran a 52 and I've been smoking cigs for about 15 years 59 is slow and i'm out of shape to say the least.

Do you even think when you post? You say there is no way and then you allow,that it may be true.
I will educate you. You can have a max 400 speed of 59 and run under 29 minutes for 10000m and under 14 for 5000m. So of course one could have 59 400 speed and go out in 2:12 in a 5000m race, for example.
