Is it pretentious to say that I like indie music?

Personally I almost disregard genre labeling. Music is.

And I guess that goes for "indie" music, whatever that is. I recognize that there are categories of music for purposes of organizing and presenting, but there are qualities that all music shares that tip me toward one performer or a group doing any particular piece. I can become ad enthralled over a track on one of my Miles Davis albums as much as I become involved in a Willy Nelson rendition of an old standard. I even saw a video of Kanye West doing a choreographed thing that I loved. Put some Tom Waits, Alison Krause on or Greg Brown and I'm as happy as if it's the MJQ!

Good music is good music.¹
