HS track coach had us do heavy stretching before warming up, situps in the gravel parking lot, and run 3 miles on the train tracks. We were not allowed to practice field events - but assigned to participate in them in meets. Many had no idea what events they were in until the meet. Track team always had a lot of freshman, some sophomores, a couple juniors and no seniors. Attrition by coaching.
Worked with a High school coach and asked if I could talk to the runners about how to run a good race. I started to talk about how to pace yourself through a race and not die out after the first mile, he cut me off mid-sentence and told the kids to leave. The coach perhaps had some sprinting background, but no real knowledge of distance.
The team was made up of one really good runner and a bunch of mid-pack runners. At the state 5K meet, the good runner was in 40th place 1/2 mile in (only 5 seconds off the lead). I overheard the coach say, "I wonder what's wrong with him?" After 1 mile, the kid was in 15th, with a mile to go, he was in 6th, and he finished in 2nd place. One of the best races I've ever seen a high-school guy run. The guy was good in spite of his coach.
HS coach wants team to stop studying for ACT, drop AP and other classes with lots of homework so we can sleep longer to train longer.
lol you should easily sleep.
I've taken 12 ap's (im a junior now), 35 on act, AND i have run sub 15 for the 5k and I get 10 hours of sleep and I have 500 hours of community service. I am leader of 3 clubs and I am the class president. I also am hot.
A week out from the most important meet of the season, xc coach had us do this "grueling workout that will eat you alive."
It basically consisted of a tempo pace segment, periodically interrupted by fast 800's and 400's, lasting 40 minutes.
I went home and did the math, only to discover that the coach had asked us to run 12K at 5K race pace in a practice! Guy's insane!

if you're coach was able to get you all to do 12k @ your 5k pace, you have the greatest coach ever! wow. I wish my coach could just make my 5k pace my 12k pace, thatd be neat af

Really enjoying this thread:
http://www.letsrun.com/forum/flat_read.php?thread=7784031&page=2So I want to start one about coaches.
I have had 3 really good coaches, who I trust in their training 100 percent but was 1
Middle school xc I ran, had run some over the summer, so I thought I was hot stuff, winning middle school meets, anyways she has us running about 8 miles a week in 8th grade. Then I do track, run slower for 3200 than I did in xc for 2 miles with the coach coaching me in track
Then high school i have an awesome xc coach, but she won't let him do track because she already has it. Basically tells us we can only run 300 meter warm up before speed work which we do everyday. She said slow runs make slow runners.
Next year for track has us do a 1600 meter time trial the first day of track after we have a break from xc. Tells the other coach how sad and pathetic my teammate and I look doing it (the top 2 runners on the xc and track distance teams... she is now coaching an xc team and has 1 guy under 20 and one girl under 21 tell me about pathetic).
So we do speed work everyday. Obviously I dont improve at all. I ask her about long runs, she is against me doing any, but this chill sprint/mid distance coach who ran mid distance coach was like yeahh if you wana do some just throw in a 10 mile long runs on sundays.. after running 15 mpw over track half way through the season just throwing a 10 mile run in sundays.....
Tells kids on the track team how annoying and stupid the awesome xc coach is.
Learn English.
+1

You sound like the cry baby girls team at my school. You can take APs and get 10 hours of sleep. And why would you skip practice to study for an ACT?
If you need that much time to study then you probably aren't smart enough to handle those classes anyway. But kudos to you for trying. But if you can't make practice because you need study time I suggest you quit running and get fat.

If you have to run more than 20 miles a week you probably aren't good enough for anything anyway. Props for trying.

lol false equivalency! If you sacrifice your health you are not smart enough to do the ap tests.
My team was upset we didn't make states. He told us "we made that decision was made when we didn't run in the summer and every times we missed practice."
I was so pissed I walked off with my parents and didn't say bye. I'm thinking of talking to the AD. What do you think?
My head coach fired our distance coach. The reason? The distance coach was doing such a good job that the head coach felt overshadowed.
Our team was a joke. We had plenty of talent, but we thought we were doing great to train 20mpw and have one or two guys get down into the 17s. When our new distance coach came on, he brought a whole new attitude and made us realize that with some real training and a better mindset, we could compete with anyone. That XC season, we qualified for states as a team for the first time in years. In track, our guys ran a 7:4X 4X800. We came back for the next XC season and finished top 10 in the state.
This all just pushed the head coach around the bend. He elected not to renew the distance coach's contract as soon as the opportunity presented.
I'm now a professional with years of "real world" experience, and I don't think I've seen quite as destructive a display of vanity from anyone in a position of authority since.
External attribution, anyone?
My high school coach got a 16 year old girl pregnant who was on the girls team. He was in his mid 30's, married, and had a few kids. He talked her into getting an abortion. The girl came clean to her parents after she had the procedure. The parents obviously got the school involved. All they did was made him resign because the parents did not want the police getting involved and it be publicized. Before all this happened, he had my whole cross team come to his hotel room after a meet(we were there for the state meet). When we showed up, he had us go check out his bathtub. It was filled with ice and booze. The whole team got smashed that night. One guy passed out on the floor, and another teammate pissed all over his face. Needless to say, the coach was grooming the girls team to make a move on one of them. I know the story sounds unbelievable, but it 100% happened.

Were you pissed off due to his incorrect grammar? If so, instead of the AD, maybe talking to one of the English teachers might help.
I hope you're going to the AD to ask for your coach's raise, because he's completely right. Run a little over the summer and miracles will happen. I'm the only one on my team who trains over the summer, hence I run good times. I hate the kids like you who have the balls to complain about the program but can't find the time to put any effort in. At least you have an honest coach, because he's damn right.
