I have a question to colleges have the ability to test an athlete to see if they have low calcium or a greater risk of stress fractures? I mean you see them drug test, treating all types of injuries, and even surgies?
Is there a test that could predict if someone is at a greater risk?
I agree - no one owes me squat! This is why I said "as a courtesy." Knucklehead... Of course he doesn't have to report anything about Allie or any of his runners if he doesn't want to, or if the runner wants to keep it private. Sooner or later though people will ask him about Allie and he will have to either reveal information or say "no comment."
Yes - there are several tests available for bone strength. Done usually for patients with osteoporosis. Just google "bone density tests osteoporosis"
However - this is all just speculative talk - for all we know she just has a mild case of the flu, or has been training very hard and a race tomorrow would not be beneficial.

Running is a bit different than other sports. Coaches often keep things close to the vest, whereas in football if the star quarterback was sitting out from a top 5 or 10 team there would be several local articles and the national media would pick it up. And we'd know why the athlete would not be competing. With running it seems to be the coach's prerogative to reveal whether an athlete is competing and why or why not.
Was also looking forward to seeing a competitive race that included Allie. Rohrer, Brenna, and other top ladies now have just an extra bit of pressure as the expectations for a win increase with Allie's absence. Honestly, I'm not sure how clear of a favorite Allie was to win anyhow since we haven't seen her run since the trials.
Will Broncos get enough points to qualify for nats without Allie? I don't think they will auto-qualify out of their region, right? Brenna should be a low-stick tomorrow (and possibly win), but the rest of the squad needs to step up!
Just logged on and saw this thread. I'm sure we'll learn more tomorrow, as many people will probably be asking the boise coach and runners about Allie. So, word will get out whether the coach talks about it or not. Hope she is not injured.
In the meantime, I saw that video of Brenna win at Griak on Flo, and she looked very strong over last 2K. So I'm going with Brenna FTW.
We might as well start the thread for Peloquin having a bad injury during next XC. How can people not see that this is the result of anorexia, and that Peloquin will be replaced by the next one, next year?

I recall seeing her drop out of NCAA Indoors with what appeared to be a knee problem.
Regardless, was amazed to see he race the Trials after nearly 4 months off . . . and race so well.

DEXA scan.
Low BMI athletes seem to be at high risk of stress fractures. Weight lifting can help. Not because their muscles aren't strong enough to run fast, and it really never helps directly to be heavier, but stronger muscles and more muscle mass will signal the bones to strengthen.

there is no scientific connection between lifting and stronger bones.

However, at the same time, when you have a runner of Allie's quality, I think Ihmels sort of owes it to the running community (as a courtesy) to state a reason for her being sidelined.

I have heard the stress fracture rumor. Considering she was out the entire track season (except for the Oly Trials) and she is still out. The injury that will put an athlete out for an extended period of time is a stress fracture.

Poor nutrition, Female Athlete Triad, too much running, running on the wrong surface. Take your pick it's a combination of the above.
I would not be surprised if she pulls the plug on Boise State because clearly the program is not monitoring their star athlete's medical well being.
Remember guys colleges should not be sharing medical information with the general public unless they have the permission of the athlete. It's called Privacy Laws.
