He probably already dropped $100 for the race entry. He should do the marathon as his long run (18-20 miles) at a race pace and drop out at that point. He can test his fitness based on his training, and plan better for future runs.

Start slower and finish. Do the race, don't DNF unless you're injured or bonk.
