Looking at things strictly from a nutritional standpoint, vegan diets (done properly) are incredibly effective for most runners. Without any exogenous cholesterol entering your bloodstream, your arteries will function at the next level. It's truly an incredible feeling.

If you decide to go that route (or to only eat meat once a week or so), here's what I recommend:

-Tons of whole grains (brown rice, black rice, quinoa, millet, sorghum, amaranth, oats, and 100% whole grain wheat, if you tolerate gluten)

-Healthy servings of vegetables

-Fruit before and after runs

-Lentils, legumes, and nuts and seeds in reasonable amounts

-A good plant-based protein powder (preferably a blend of several types of protein)

-A B-12 supplement (everyone should do this, regardless of their diet)

-Algae-based DHA (expensive, but worth it)

-Iodine through seaweed or a supplement

-Vitamin D3/K2 blend in the winter

Yes. I'm vegan I run 100mpw barefoot, let's see a weak guy do that, you need super fast recovery and strong feet/legs. I've only been running one year too. I'm 6'4" and need around 800g of carbs a day, forget protein supplements, supplement with sugar in your rice/smoothies and you'll recover within 10 hours between workouts.

Some of my staples for recovering from workouts:

400g dates + 30g sugar blended with soy milk

1600g banana + 60g sugar smoothie

No less than 14 oranges as a meal

No less than 5 mangos as a meal

1500 cals of watermelon

When I eat these meals I recover less than 16 hours, sometimes when I do my double I can do another 7x1000 interval if I had a nap afterwards. I add a head of romaine lettuce sometimes too.

Cooked staples are

300g rice + 40g sugar + 2 cans of chopped tomatoes + sweetcorn. This is a super fast easy meal where I simply dump two cans of tomatoes into the pan of rice after it's cooked. I'll let it steam for 5 minutes with the lid on to warm the tomatoes/sweetcorn. Sounds boring but with the sugar it's good and my appetite is huge with all the running I do.

Baked sweet potatoes 1000g chopped into big wedges.

8 big Jacket Potatoes with mushy peas. Sometimes just eat them on their own as they taste good when you're used to having no fatty/salty condiments.

That's pretty much my staples. Rice is full of iron/carbs, digests easily, lots of zinc. Bananas full of potassium/electrolytes so my legs always feel strong for workouts. Dates full of iron/sugar. Romaine for iron/omega3/vit K. Mangos lots of Vit E to repair skin for barefoot running. Sweet potatoes convert to simple sugars when cooked so it's like cooked fruit.

I hit over 100% on every nutrient daily. Iron is always over 300% and my blood levels are perfect and I can provide proof (if anyone wanted it).

LMAO. Empty calories, right. Sourdough, wholewheat, dark rye are anything but empty. Another American who confuses white fluffy bread for real European bread.

Try to actually attempt to be someone who can think past the hype of grouping ALL carbs under one umbrella, ok? You might actually get faster too with these "empty" calories, because perhaps complex and simple carbs are different.

I put the fruits in a blender and make it juice.

Then I mix it with honey and shake it well. That's it.

It needs to be kept in refrigerator, otherwise will begin the fermentation.

The cocktail has a wonderful taste, but you can't drink more than a few tablespoons per day because is very concentrated.

The stomach cannot digest those together as they are terribly incompatible!

You must have terrible problems with bloating and flatulence.

Thanks for the details. That's not very much juice. I'd probably starve drinking that, though it apparently makes a nice hedge.

Btw why not try fermenting the fruit in water for awhile. I've fermented dates, plums, raisins, garlic, cucumbers, carrots and various other fruit and veggies.

Sea buckthorn is not supposed to keep you satiated.

It is a great natural supplement of B complex (found in red meat only), Omega 3 (found in fish only) and Omega 7 (found in just another fruit).

You can make an orange juice and add a few cups of sea buckthorn to it.

Personally I'm not a vegan, but I take this cocktail for health and sport.
