Clueless.
I was in the loop of Australian athletics due to the fact that I was a coach at the time and in the lead up to Sydney 2000 authorities wanted to promote a grand prix series in the Southern Hemisphere summer to gin up the public's interest in the up coming Olympics. The TV network (Nine or 7) wanted someone who could break a world record or do something impressive, Kim McDonald who was based for long parts of the year in Australia negotiated it. Carl Lewis and Donavan Bailey both received a $1m appearance fee for running in Auckland (not including bonuses).
